Wondering where the smell of grilled meat is coming from? You should probably point your snout to Madison Square Park. This weekend is the 7th annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party (so popular that their website is even down, but here's a pdf map). You can get your fill of food — whole hog, brisket, pork shoulder, ribs and sausages — for $8 a plate from 15 different pitmasters until 7pm tonight. Proceeds from the weekend benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy.
If you're planning on heading over for the BBQ, be sure to get there early. The lines are slightly shorter earlier on and some pitmasters may run out of food. And if you don't like BBQ, there's always Shake Shack. But you should know that the lines yesterday were still long, despite the availability of barbecue.

I went yesterday and it was CHAOS. I had a fast pass and even so, the lines were very slow, several pitmasters ran out of food by 3:00 (Wilson's, Salt Lick, and Hill Country) and the event was in general, very overcrowded. The food was terrific, but I won't be back next year.
I felt the same way about Taste of Chinatown. They never ran out of food, but I just got tired of having to elbow my way to the tables there and stopped going.
The center lawn was closed this year which really made for massive over crowding. We were disappointed by that and by the lack of variety this year. There were many types of ribs and pulled pork, but other stand outs (like hushpuppies or Brunswick stew) were missing.
I went for the 3rd time this year and I waited about an hour for the stand I really like. It was a little crazy because people didn't know where the line actually ended because it was so long, but besides that, at least it wasn't as hot as it was last year.
i showed up today at 10:30 and grabbed a bench to sit on since the grass area was closed. i have to say, it was not that crowded as compared to last year. although, the lines for the regular attendes was huge, as normal, the fast pass lines were very very fast. the guards are the gates were anal not letting anyone pass without a fast pass. this was so much better then last year. i managed to be 5th on line when salt licked opened up. i barely waited 3 mins on the fast pass lines, (not counting salt lick b/c the fast pass line was huge at 3pm). if you want the food, you gotta go early and beat the crowds and claim a bench.
I went today (Sunday) and they started running out of food around 4. After going to 2 places with short lines (including Salt Lick, which had run out of brisket, but still had sausage), we gave up and went to Shake Shack. The line wasn't as long as usual, and at least they weren't going to run out of food.
I'm glad I went, but it was kind of a bust. I'm sorry to hear that they ran out of food Saturday, too. There goes my plan for next year.
This is just retarded...
I think there are still some people waiting in line for food.
I always find out about these things too late...
Its always the same weekend as the worst parade in the city.
I havent been in a few years... $8 a plate for THAT? Looks delicious but a little skimpy for $8. wow.
