Last Night's Action: Two Hands!

Yankees 9 Mets 8: In all the years of the Subway Series, there has never been an ending like this one. For almost four hours, the Yankees and Mets battled back and forth, trading runs and the lead over and over again. Like they have done all season, the Yankees used home runs to get on the scoreboard with Robinson Cano starting things off in the second inning to put the Yankees up 1-0. But, Joba Chamberlain could not find the plate on Friday and the Mets took advantage of his wildness to take a 2-1 lead. Mark Teixeira went deep to put the Yankees up 3-2 but the Mets jumped all over Brett Tomko in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

Hideki Matsui, celebrating his 35th birthday, went deep in the sixth with a three-run shot to bring the Yankees back in front 7-6, but the Mets added single runs in the seventh and eighth to take an 8-7 lead.

And that setup an amazing bottom of the ninth. With one out, Derek Jeter singled and advanced to second on a stolen base. But, Johnny Damon struck out and after throwing three balls to Mark Teixeira, Frankie Rodriguez decided to issue him an intentional walk. That brought A-Rod to the plate and Alex got under a 3-1 fastball, lifting a towering pop to short right. From the minute you start playing organized baseball, they tell you to use “two hands” when catching a popup. Luis Castillo ignored that advice and as he tried to squeeze A-Rod’s popup with his glove, it squirted out. Jeter scored from second and Mark Teixeira raced home from first with one of the most unlikely winning runs in baseball history.

    Yankees 9 Mets 8?

Visiting teams bat first. Home team bats second. The Mets went to Yankee Stadium and batted first. Any baseball fan should know the score was Mets 8, Yankees 9. A trivial point, but if you're reporting sports, an editor should know this.

You have to be kidding. In all my years of following not just baseball but any team sport, the winning or leading team's score is always given first. Yankees 9, Mets 8. No one would put it any differently.

That "Any baseball fan should know" crack is one of the lamest attempts ever. Any baseball fan would know that the winning team is named first.

epic fail.. does it even matter . If your talking baseball score the logical thing to say is the yankees beat the mets 9 to 8. No one says the yankees beat the mets with the mets score 8 the yankees 9.

A trivial point but your a dumb ass. anyone reading your comment should know this

The standard remains VISITING TEAM(SCORE), HOME TEAM (SCORE)in the press/news.

I might even get "Two Hands" as a tattoo on my arm.

Seriously, I'm still stunned. And the worst thing is the crap I'm going to hear from all my Yankee friends tomorrow.

  • DanielJ

Brilliant! I love that Rivera gets the win.
