Mayor Bloomberg expressed further support for the city and Port Authority's joint plan to kill 2,000 geese during their molting season in order to prevent accidents like the one that left Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. On his radio show yesterday, Bloomberg said, "There are people who care very much about the geese. But in the end, safety of the public is No. 1. There is not a lot of cost involved in rounding up a couple thousand geese and letting them go to sleep with nice dreams. We're trying to strike a balance. In the safety of flying, the public trumps the rights of the geese...(This way is) less stressful way of eliminating geese. They actually use carbon dioxide, and they just sort of go to sleep." Geese in various city parks within five miles of local airports will begin getting rounded into portable pens where they're killed with cabon dioxide-filled chambers on Monday. Wayne Johnson, a "free-land activist," told the Post, "There's a ton of nonlethal alternatives," such as chemical repellents and goose-frightening pyrotechnics.

Buy a goose repellent. There are several chemical repellents on the market that you can buy. These products use biodegradable, non-toxic substance that taste and smell bad to the geese. This is a very effective method for getting rid of Canadian Geese.
Audio repellents use Canadian Geese warning and danger calls to scare away geese. This is a very humane way to get rid of your yard invaders. You will need to buy one audio repellent system for each 5 to 7 acres of land.
All the repellents do whether they are chemical or aural is to move the geese away from one area to another. Geese in flight is what is causing the problem not their nesting or feeding. And the chemicals used are expensive both in actual material cost and their application costs.
To make the aural solution work you need to supply them with electricity, plus they make noise. At a 5 to 7 acre coverage JFK airport which is approximately 5,000 acres would need 1,000 of them. And again the geese would just move out of the range of the devices and settle nearby if the conditions are favorable.
It comes down to a cost effective solution that will work. Do you have one?
One more thing about the aural devices. There is a goose distress call that is one of the sounds that this device makes, but two other sounds that it makes is the cry of a coyote and the sound of a shotgun. Now if the sound of a shotgun going off every 20 to 30 minutes doesn't wake you then the sound of a coyote will. Unless of course the shotgun has a silencer which would of course not make the device very effective.
I know the sound of a coyote doesn't work because they are around my place and they howl and I still have geese.
SAVE THE GEESE
Demonstration Tuesday June 16th from 12pm to 2pm held at Port Authority Headquarters at 225 Park Avenue South Close to Union Square.
I will be the guy with the Mets cap on.
This is a despicable measure. I was SICK to find out they would be targeting the geese at Riverside Park. It's not even near the airport! What kind of sick person would kill these cute little baby geese?
http://urbanhawks.blogs.com/urban_hawks/2009/05/other-parents-in-nyc.html
All of us who use the park have been following them all spring.
I think I just decided I won't be voting for Bloomberg after all.
PS: Felix, thanks for the info, I will make every effort to attend.
They are cute. Are they cuter or more vital to protect than baby humans?
Now if this spray was used in Central Park which is a little over 800 acres (32,000,000 square feet) and a gallon of this spray (which costs slightly over a $100 a gallon) covers approximately 32,000 square feet. Then you would need a thousand gallons of spray which would cost in material alone $100,000 plus the labor to spray the material and this would have to be repeated after the next rainfall.
All of this to save 2,000 geese? And that is just one park in NYC. You would have to spray every park in NYC. How about Prospect park, Van Cortland park, etc. etc. etc.
He didn't really say "with nice dreams," did he?
An interesting overview of the alternatives is at:
http://wildlife1.wildlifeinformation.org/S/00Ref/ProceedingsContents/ProceedingsRef100_WATERFOWLINFORMATIONNETWORK/Paper10.htm
If the link doesn't work, Google "IMS" & "Canada Geese".
Well written paper from an impartial perspective examining control methods, from the UK.
Thanks for the article reference. It basically supports what I have been saying all along. All the "humane" methods only move them to other areas. Culling the huge growth of these pests is the only effective way of solving an increasing problem.
Why a Duck Why a No Chicken?
All these crocodile tears for Canada Geese? What make them so special?
Yeah they do fly in nice formations etc
but ask Willie the greenskeeper about the havoc they raise on the Golf Links...
Why doesn't Bloomberg start a campaign against the roaches that are causing an asthma epidemic in poor nyc neighborhoods? That problem sounds more troubling than the rare airplane crash.
Humane Control for Geese
http://www.canadageese.org/nlcontrol.html
The only method that I see can be effective is using OvoControl G. At $12.00 per year per goose, and a goose lives approximately 20 years the cost comes to about $240 per goose times a hell of a lot of geese, plus the cost to disperse the OvoControl G equals big dollars.
Come on people start raising the money.
Snoopy, you are a deplorable person who is so miserable. I hope the cops find you before you prey on that 14 year old hottie neighbor that you stated you want to "screw".
Are you sure you'd want them to find your DNA?
BLOOMIES WAR ON GEESERISM
Carbon dioxide asphyxiation is not humane. It results in hyperventilation and panic. Death does occur in about a minute, but that final minute is terrifying. I've seen it used many times to euthanize laboratory research animals, and they completely freak out.
Also, as other commenters have noted in related articles, the geese that downed flight 1549 were five miles from LGA, at a couple of thousand feet, and probably were not residing in the the city.

Bloomberg and Geese
That was one lousy job of trying to make a short tape. Whoever tried should try again after they learn how to use photoshop.
Did you make it yourself or did you have assistance?
There is no alternative, no bobcats, eagles, cougars, foxes, or gators in NYC to eat them. Its like an overgrown pigeon or rat. They live off people food, and nothing else in the world exists in NYC to kill them except people.
if the geese that downed the jet were LGA or JFK geese, prove it. leave city geese alone.
birds are gonna fly, that's just the way it is.
now airplanes are another story.
this won't work.
Just because the media keeps harping that the geese brought down the airbus doesn't mean it is true. The geese have just as much right to live as we do. Mankind is the infestation on this planet. What sorry excuses for humans we turned out to be. The airbus doing down in the Hudson was human error. It is always human error.

Where do you get your information from? Where do you get your information from?
Who were the individuals and what were the conditions created by human error?
"Mankind is the infestation on this planet." Well you can always start solving that problem by offing yourself.
Ask this guy if he supports the EinsatzGoosen
There are probably two reasons that the goose was attacking. The first being the boat was near to a nest. The second being the dog has somewhat the coloring and shape of a coyote, one of the natural predators of geese. Notice the goose was not going for the yachtsman.
The dog is obviously well mannered because he could have taken the goose out with two snaps if he wanted to. Secondly the good old boy should have wacked the goose a bit harder to show him who was in control of the situation. I've seen many times when a goose on goose fight ends when a wing is crippled. Plus geese do not have teeth, so why would the dog back off?
Well mannered dog?..obviously close to a nest or maybe its a goose that has had it with Human Civilization and wants
World Goose Domination
I'll stick with the latter and endorse the Einsatzgoosen
Snoopy here is a better version
Thanks, Fritz.
A couple of well placed rounds from a 12 gauge might make that goose take a second look at attacking my dog.
Oh but the poor goosey. He was frightened and protective. OK pump a few more rounds into him and his friends to let them know we don't like geese attacking our well mannered dogs.
Snoop, whether you're letting off one round or five, please use non-lead shot (steel, bismuth, etc.). There are those of us who kill and/or eat things and do it in a responsible fashion. I gave up lead in my fishing sinkers years before it was in vogue. Non-lead shot is more expensive and a bit rougher on the barrel, but with a decent gun, proper cleaning and a sportsmens' ethic, it's worth it in the long run.
If any of you have daughters or nieces then report Snoopy who stated he wanted to screw his 14year hottie neighbors. It only shows how those who abuse animals also harm people.
Felix... Your repeated attempts to introduce a misquoted, out of context outtake from the other night's flame play are detracting from people who are trying to express their opinion on an issue they feel strongly about. If, as you profess, you are so strongly concerned about other living beings you will return to the debate at hand and return to making your case, and others will listen to and consider. A case is best made by the presenation of information, explanation of reasoning and thoughtful comment. By your actions, you are hurting your own case and making anything you may present to us more likely to be ignored. If you feel strongly, debate properly.
If you do not or cannot debate properly, go away.
Felix is a troll, this is not news
sorry if I am offended by pedophilia, perhaps you aren't but Snoopy quoted he wants to screw his 14 year old hottie neighbor and gothamist removed the comment.
For your information I don't even know any 14 year olds. And there aren't any in my neighborhood, but here's an idea.
If you’re so concerned about wildlife why don’t you go stand out in the center lane of route 80 in the middle of New Jersey at three in the morning and pass out fliers to the drivers warning them to slow down because a little Bambi might cross the road?
BTW wear dark clothes if you have them.
I support rounding up the geese and creating a new style of New York flavored Foi gras for the masses.
Delicious!
I'm not sure if you can use Candian geese to make foi gras. Perhaps if use French Canadian geese it might work.
killing of the wrong geese http://www.canada.com/news/Canada%20geese%20from%20Labrador%20likely%20blame%20river%20landing/1674985/story.html
This is typical low brow brainless reactionary thinking on the part of a corrupt city government and an equally corrupt port authority. It's so easy to attack defenseless birds and animals. Bloomberg hates birds and other wild animals and wants to fine people for feeding them. He is a criminal and needs to be impeached, deposed and prevented from a third term.
Feed Mayor Bloomberg, Feed A Rat
Gateway National Recreation area seems to be within 5 miles of JFK. Are they going to invade a protected area to present this dubious solution to a rare disaster? The Wildlife Refuge near Broad Channel is part of that. Central Park and Prospect Park are outside that radius as far as I can tell from Google Maps.
