Pedicab Crashes into Cab in Brooklyn, Injuring At Least 2

061009pedicabaccident.jpg Reports are filtering in about a bad accident this morning between a pedicab and yellow taxi in Williamsburg. According to CBS2, the pedicab driver was heading eastbound off the Williamsburg Bridge pedestrian walkway when he crashed into the taxi on Bedford Avenue shortly after 7:30 a.m. The unconscious pedicab driver was taken to Bellevue Hospital with head injuries, and the Post reports that his two passengers are also listed in critical condition with head injuries. But CBS2 says the male passenger was not injured, while a 22-year-old female passenger was hospitalized with neck and back injuries. Apparently, the pedicab "snapped in half" upon impact! Those familiar with the Williamsburg Bridge pedestrian walkways might be surprised by the accident's location; of the two ramps leading off the bridge in Brooklyn, the one that abruptly empties onto Bedford Avenue is significantly more steep and narrow. It's unclear at this point why the pedicab driver exited down that ramp, or if excessive speed was a factor.

Pedicabs are extremely dangerous and should be outlawed. The drivers have little to no training and the passengers are completely exposed to oncoming dangers. My friend's father was killed in this horrific accident in Seattle last year:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008099193_pedicab08m.html

More dangerous than driving 70mph or more down the highway in a steel chariot of death? Maybe cars should be outlawed for being dangerous. And maybe prescription drugs, high fructose corn syrup, and anything sharp.

Shit happens. People die. Meh.

What is a pedicab doing on a pedestrian walkway?

It's called "pedestrian" but it's mixed use for cyclists and pedestrians.

i've never seen a pedicab on the williamsburg bridge at all, so this is surprising. also, that bridge has two walkways that empty onto the street: one at driggs avenue, which is is wider and longer and one at bedford avenue, which is shorter, steeper and way narrower. i can't imagine how he made it all the way down the steep, narrow bedford walkway without trapping everyone else on it.

when i ride my bike down that ramp i always slow to a stop at the street. cars and cabs are usually racing along that strip since it's situated between intersections. i NEVER glide right along onto the street without first slowing and looking to my right for vehicles.

this sounds like the pedicab driver's fault to me.

these guys have no idea what they're doing most of the time. i got into an accident with a pedicab riding my bike down fifth avenue 2 years ago.

we were both riding down the left-hand lane without any other traffic around us for blocks. he was probably 50-75 yards ahead of me, approaching an intersection for which the light was GREEN. then, for no reason, he slows to a stop. he doesn't pull over to the curb, he doesn't signal, he just stops at the intersection with me barreling along behind him, not realizing that he was no longer moving. by the time it did, i didn't have enough time to fully apply my brakes. i slammed into the back of his little wagon (luckily there was no one on board) with enough force to flip me up into the air. i landed on the concrete and pedestrians swarmed to find out if i was ok. i yelled at the pedicab driver and asked him why he felt to need to stop in the middle of the lane at a green lighted intersection. his answer? "i just felt like stopping."

I wish John would have worked the word 'pediphile' into the article

Also, Adam, I hear what your saying... but the world we live in is full of dangerous and deadly objects; from innocent items such as peanuts and lollipops, to the more obvious items like weapons, automobiles....

This is true. I guess rather than outlawed, it would be nice to see some standards set for these private companies, in terms of training, vehicle safety, etc.

I suppose that the pedicab guy was mercifully shot to spare him further pain and his body sold to a glue factory.

Ha!

This leaves more job openings for the poor hipsters mentioned in yesterday's Gothamist.

Pedicabs are quaint in parks and on smaller roads, but these things do not belong on busy city streets.

Cars are quaint and useful in wide-open spaces and small or spread-out cities, but they do not belong in a dense urban environment with excellent mass transit like New York.

Our transit system can barely handle the number of passengers it has now. How "excellent" do you think it would be if that were the only way for people to get around?

It would still be excellent. If everyone in a car took mass transit, you'd hardly notice the difference. They consist of 2-5% of commuters, yet use 60% of the real estate for commuting.

And yes, I made those numbers up.

I certainly don't deny this, but you'd have a hell of a time convincing the city to ban cars.

Is a pedicab a "cyclist" ? Where do the pedicab folk park their cabs? I have never seen one riding out of Manhattan with or without a fare. Very sad story. I am surprised that they aren't regulated by TLC. I hope the driver has good insurance. I doubt it, though.

The city tried to regulate pedicabs a couple of years ago. But like so many other instances, they went too far, screwed it up and the regulations were struck down by the courts.

Why are there Pedicabs in Williamsburg to begin with? Only pretentious snots ride in those.

I think I just answered my own question...

This is why god created horses and, unrelatedly, bacon mayonnaise.

Asshole, God didn't create horses for this purpose.

7:30 in the morning going to Williamsburg by pedicab? There's more to this story that is being told.

Pedicab drivers aren't even allowed to leave Midtown. Two idiot hipsters probably convinced their pedicab driver buddy to give them a ride home, over the bridge. Didn't they think for a minute that it could be dangerous?

Morons.

this is probably the most hilariously pitiful and unsubstantiated "blame the hipsters" instance i've ever seen in print. bravo on your irrational conjecture!

Hope it was the one that almost ran me over a couple of days ago.

I see pedicabs on the WB bridge daily. I've been waiting for this to happen. They speed down the south side of the bridge (the one that empties onto Bedford). Those familiar with the bridge know that that walkway is about 3 people wide. From what I can tell (I walk to work) they poach people at the Manhattan side and peddle them to Brooklyn. Hope the guy is OK but Snoopy said is true... "7:30 in the morning going to Williamsburg by pedicab? There's more to this story that is being told".

Needless to say, again, hope the guy makes it.

The whole story seems very fishy to me as well. What worries me is the fact that pedicabs aren't allowed to leave manhattan. They don't have insurance for that and are highly regulated, so the passengers could sue...

That side of the bridge is dangerous. That pedicab driver must not have known that there was a busy street at the bottom of the bridge.

I saw this mess this morning. It looked pretty gnarly.
If one of these fuckers comes down that ramp when my wife and I are going up it with our baby in a stroller, they will end up in the same predicament.
assholes.

Why would you people assume it is "hipsters" in these stupid-ass pedicabs? I see them on 5th Ave every day and they are used by tourists exclusively.

Because it's easy to blame things on "hipsters". Whatever/whoever they are.

virgil, thank you for that example of genuine craftsmanship the likes of which one doesn't often see these days.
