NY Voters Remind Paterson He's Unwelcome Amidst Turmoil

2009_01_patersonstat.jpg If this week's turmoil in Albany hasn't been enough to give Governor Paterson agita, a new poll is here to remind him that most New Yorkers have little faith that he is the man that can lead them through it. In this one, conducted by the NY Times, the governor's favorability rating sits at 21%, with over 70% saying the state is on the wrong track and a third of New Yorkers saying they wished they lived in another state. And with six in ten New Yorkers unable to even think of one example when asked what the best thing Paterson's done, maybe the Senate crisis could be his golden opportunity. Today he had strong words, telling WCBS 880, "My issue is that this is the last two weeks of session. This is a not a political time...Could we get rid of politics just for a few minutes and work on government?...This would be like stopping a movie right at the main part of the movie to discuss the contracts of the actors."

I happen to like the guy, but I'm not here to defend him. What I am here to ask is if these same people who were polled can recall one good thing Pataki did during his 12 years, or one good thing Spitzer did during his brief stint?

Welcome to NY State, where having ineffective politicians is all one can hope for (ie. Senate full of scumbags pulling off shady shit).

I like him too...in a Starbucks apron, making someone else's latte.

I hate Pataki, but he did raise the speed limit to 65. That's about the only good thing I can think of.

He wasn't supposed to be the Gov, we elected Spitzer. Eliot self-destructed and we wound up with Paterson. The political parties have to be more careful with 2nd place nominees. We've got to be more careful with these selections. We're really voting for both the nominee and his possible successor. They've got to stop naming the least offensive candidate and start thinking worst case scenario.

You almost have to wonder if Spitzer tipped someone off about the hooker thing so he'd be able to resign and hand off the wheel to Paterson. I'm not a huge fan of Paterson but the guy was handed the job right before the economy flushed itself down the toilet. There's no way he could possibly finish out Spitzer's term without getting dragged down.

History is full of leaders who stepped up to the job during a crisis. Harry Truman stepped into a whole of crap following 12 years of FDR and did a pretty good job. But, Patterson is no Truman.

Who are these third who wish they lived in another state? Weird.

Why is it so weird? There are plenty of possible reasons people don't move. They own homes in NYS and can't sell them in today's market. They're unemployed. They have jobs but don't have the money to move. They're afraid they won't be able to find jobs if they move. They have family here.

People want lower taxes and state and local gov't that works right. Instead they pay through the nose for crap. No matter how good the clams are at Gregory and Paul's, it's enough to make them consider moving.

Not easy to move unless you are very young, and haven't started a career yet, or are very old and retired. Jobs, family, and friends can keep people tied to areas that they otherwise think are pretty sh----. I love the "why don't they move" comments on the internet, I always assume they come from retired people.

One thing about New York is that the downturn has hit less hard in NYC than elsewhere, so if you move you will find jobs harder to come by in your new location.

I'll admit that with the dysfunctional government, and the fact that we can't get any of the big city defining projects built except for turning Times Square into a mall, I find it almost embarrasing to live here. The crappy weather we've been having probably isn't helping peoples' moods.
