16-Year-Old "Driver" Fatally Hits Pedestrian

A 16-year-old with a learner's permit "struck and killed a 65-year-old pedestrian in Brooklyn" last night, 1010WINS reports. Stanislaw Zak had been waiting for a bus near Bay Ridge Parkway and 18th Avenue at 9:20 p.m. The teen, whose Mazda had struck another car before hitting Zak, will be "ticketed for driving with a learner's permit without a licensed driver"—it's unclear whether the teen will be charged with anything more.

he deserves life in jail. i live on the block and saw the whole thing. it happened right accross the street from my house. after he killed the poor man his car spun and flipped out of control, and slammed into the back of my truck, which then hit the car in front of it, and that car hit the car in front of it, which was my sister's car. my truck was totaled...his mazda was literally in the trunk. and when we ran over to his car he popped right up out of the window, whith the car on its side, with cell phone in hand screaming "my father is going to kill me!" the kid is a little prick who needs to learn a lesson. He affected a lot of innocent people, including the wife of the man who was killed who was also there waiting for the bus. and yet somehow this jerk walks away without a scratch. he is an asshole, and he deserves more than remembering it for the rest of his life. it's not fair that people who saw it have to remember such a gruesome tragedy. but they dont tell that part of the story on the news...

  • inoyourider

He deserves some community service and delayed full license. Thats all.

I'm sure he'll remember this forever.

  • Pharmer

All of you are assuming at the kid was just some asshole. He's probably scarred for life and won't be driving again for a long time, regardless if he's legally allowed to or not.

  • Manitoba

You think he'll be afraid to drive for a while? Well, I guess that's punishment enough for killing someone. I'll remember that the next time I kill someone: if I feel bad enough about it, then there's no need to go to jail.

  • NannyState

He struck another car first, so he likely had no control when it careened into that man at the bus stop. So for the cops, the only issue was the first collision. Insurance, and Mommy and Daddy will have to deal with the rest.

    From NYDMV website:

REGIONAL RESTRICTIONS FOR A JUNIOR PERMIT

    New York City (5 Boroughs)

    5 AM - 9 PM

You must drive only under the immediate supervision of your:

    1. Parent

    2. Guardian

    3. Person "in loco parentis"

    4. Driver Education Teacher

    5. Driving School Instructor

The person above must be at least age 21 and have a license valid for the vehicle being driven.

Vehicle must have dual controls (dual brakes).

    9 PM - 5 AM

    You must NOT drive.

    Seems pretty clear to me.

I wonder, was he wearing his seatbelt and/or not usung the phone?

    And the beat goes on...

  • Snoopy

That's for a junior permit. What are the restrictions after you get a license?

I don't know if it would be advisable to get into any car if your parents were loco. Or in fact, live in the same apartment. I read stories everyday about these loco parents, and they never have a happy ending.

  • Rocknrope

And the freedom to kill with an automobile continues...

  • Steven

Wonder what mommy and daddy think, unless they're not even around? Either way his family will be wipe clean, unless they didn't have much money to begin with.

  • Snoopy

I believe the legal age to drive in NYC without a licensed adult in the car is 18.

I have a feeling his insurance company will not pay due to his illegal operation of the vehicle. The driver should be jailed for involuntary manslaughter.

  • Pull My Finger

How about charging the little prick with murder.

  • abcohen

What a joke... We should arrest and jail more people for smoking pot - instead of KILLING PEOPLE!!!

  • babyhitler

I remember taking my driving lessons years ago and driving a bit tentatively. My instructor told me to ease up and relax. I told him I was afraid I'd kill somebody darting out from nowhere. He told me "you have to kill! If you want to drive in NYC your mentality is that you are going to kill the person who pops out of nowhere or you will never be able to drive in NYC", Needless to say, I don't drive much but it does make sense how drivers drive around here.

  • Best Commentator

Now, every teen driver will suffer punishment. The pols will make the laws tougher because of a few bad drivers.

  • abcohen

I think no one under the age of 18 should be able to drive in NYC. Long island, westchester (areas without great mass transit) are a different story... but I think its time for a NYC license and drivers test!

  • riotturtle

yeah, more bureaucracy is obviously the answer. nevermind that this kid didn't have a license, and that the only way to get a license before 18 in NYC is to take driver's ed (and even then, not until 17.) Oh yeah, and there are places in the boroughs just as underserved by mass transit as Long Island/Westchester. seriously, cut the ageist crap and focus on the fact that plenty of drivers of all ages are negligent douchebags who kill people and get away with it.

  • Manitoba

Good. Nobody should be allowed to get a license until they're 18 or 19. 16 is absurd. Regardless, this guy's family will sue the pants off of this kid's family, and given his future insurance rates, this kid will not drive again until he's 32.

Also, why is hitting someone on a sidewalk not a crime?

  • CR

Was there someone else in the car with him at the time?

  • Trilby16

It was an accident, ok? He wasn't trying to hit anybody. /sarcasm

  • barryap

I finally got my license a couple years ago, at the tender age of 23. All throughout my driving lessons, this was absolutely my worst fear.

  • r1b2

Negligent homicide? His driving when the State has not yet determined he is fit to do so is indicative of negligence, no?

Killer Kid Gets Away With Murder

  • JacqueMehoff

you're kidding? all the driver get's is a ticket?

isn't he like um, unlicensed? aren't there harsh penalties for that? the poor guy wasn't even a pedestrian, he was waiting for the bus.

  • FJF

Um...involuntary manslaughter? Or at the very least a ten-minute time out.

  • This kid broke all sorts of rules but other than a Suspension, the NYS site is vague as to punishment.

Me, I think he should not be allowed to get his license at all...

  • buttface

How about suspending his chances of getting a license until age 21? Nah, that'd make too much sense.

  • buttface

Also, a judge should rule that he attends the funeral of the person he killed. Again, too logical for reality.

  • Outter Burrougher

i'm sure that's exactly what the family of the deceased would want...
