When our weather guru Joe Schumacher proclaimed that this week's weather would be unsettled—"The primarily west-to-east flow of the summer jet stream will let surface fronts flop around like an oversized Montauk Monster in its death throes"—he was not kidding! Who wasn't woken up by the insanely loud thunder and lightning around 2:30 a.m.? The National Weather Service issued an urban flood advisory: "At 822 am EDT Doppler radar and local observations indicate very heavy rain occurring from a line of thunderstorms. The storms will move through New York City during the next 30 minutes... and Nassau County during the next hour." And AccuWeather says, "This will be the first of several waves of showers and thunderstorms expected to overspread the region through the end of the week" and "While the storms will most likely not be capable of producing tornadoes, they will feature damaging winds and some hail." Well, at least the dog poo gets washed away, right? Image from AccuWeather

This morning, it sounded like a construction site had suddenly sprung up outside the window and huge steel beams were being thrown off the 50th floor. Freaky!
I was sleeping with my window cracked. When it started to rain, I got up to shut it and right when I did it was a BOOM and FLASH. Kind of terrifying.
Being awesome in all things, I predicted this ahead of time, and thus went to work early avoiding the storm.
Ha! That's what I'm saying this morning too. I didn't even know it rained last night. Thank God for Lunesta.
Seriously, my poor dog was terrified. She's normally not really afraid of thunderstorms but this time she seemed to think someone was attacking the apartment!
Yup, got woken up around 2:30, then again about an hour ago. I'm not too mad, because thunderstorms are pretty neat.
I slept with my window open. I was waken up in the middle of the storm, raised my arm to slide the window down a bit to avoid rain hitting me, leaving a 5 inch opening, and went back to sleep. Slept like a baby throughout the night not counting the 5 seconds I was awake to slide down the window.
This is not news worthy.
Once the subways get flooded from these storms, then let me know please.
That was quite a storm. I don't remember seeing as much lightning and hearing as much thunder in a long time. The thunder was very impressive, especially when the lightning was nearby.
Usually I sleep right through storms, but last night was ridiculous.
Slept through it.
At first I thought it was unusually loud, unusually early sanit trucks.
But then it sounded like giant dumpsters being rolled end-on-end from someplace in NJ.
I usually sleep through anything, but I was also woken up by the combination of bright flashing lightning and deafening thunder. I literally was worried for a moment that a plane had crashed in our neighborhood (Brooklyn).
God rolled a perfect game, 300. Well done.
Car alarms went off in my nabe (Forest Hills).
Set off alarms on my street (Baltic Street @ Hoyt, Brooklyn)
I saw worst thunderstorms than this one. Where was the cloud to ground vivid lightning or really strong gusty winds?
Woke up thinking of terrorist attacks. Scared the living shit out of me.
