A NY1/NY Times/Cornell University poll found that while voters think Mayor Bloomberg is fine, they're happy to vote for someone this fall. NY1 reports, "The poll shows that while 60 percent of New Yorkers approve of Bloomberg's job performance, 55 percent say the want "someone else" in City Hall next year."
The NY Times breaks down some highlights (or, for the mayor's re-election team, lowlights):
"With anxiety rising over a difficult economy, few surveyed have a lot of confidence in Mr. Bloomberg’s ability to lead the city out of the recession, a troubling sign for a mayor who cited his financial acumen as the rationale for his undoing of the term limits law that otherwise would have forced him from office. In addition, some 51 percent say that the city is on the wrong track, while 40 percent say it is going in the right direction.
And though Mr. Bloomberg has sought to elevate his image nationally and internationally as a bold-thinking mayor with a record of innovation and results, New Yorkers in the survey struggle when asked to identify any particular achievement of his tenure. More than a third of those polled could not offer any answer when asked what was the best thing Mr. Bloomberg has done since he became mayor almost eight years ago."
Ouch! One Democrat who lives in Queens told the Times, "Bloomberg was supposed to be not just another politician but a businessman and smarter on the economy than anyone else. That’s why we elected him, because he was different. But he wasn’t different."
You can see results of the poll here. Notably, many respondents think term limits are a good idea (and disapprove of the extension) and nearly 75% of voters polled don't know anything about Bloomberg's expected opponent, City Comptroller William Thompson. Still, the Times points out that Bloomberg has a lot of money in his campaign war chest.

For me it's a small conundrum.
Overall, I like the job he's doing but won't vote for him after his end run around the voters.
For this voter, make that "Feh."
He's a great money manager? Yep, for his own self. Richest NYer.
the good: 311, reduction in crime while improving police relations (a little), traffic programs generally have worked well
the bad: over-reliance on development for city revenue (though hardly anyone expected this to be all that bad before 2008 or 2007)
conundrum? what? 311? who cares?
his record is irrelevant at this point.
vote this little-chavez out! this is not venezuela and voters must respond resoundingly that politicians may not change laws to suit their self-interested pursuits of power.
at least when Chavez extended term limits he did it through referendum
defending chavez? really? is that you sean penn?
I don't think he's praising Chavez so much as knocking Bloomberg by showing he's worse.
he's done a good enough job but let's vote him out please. 2 terms is enough (and suppose to be the law)
The amount of parking tickets, moving violations etc I have received under Bloomberg is astonishing. As slick of a money manager in finance as he is, his repeated solution (and only) for increasing city revenue is taxes, property tax, toll the bridges, aggressively ticket whereever and whenever possible. He could care less about the middle class.
He needs to go for many reasons, the biggest being his term limits extension. Imagine George W. Bush extending his presidency a 3rd term. I hope Thompson can wake up and start canvassing harder.
Voters are Canadian?
heard bout this on last night's NY1 the call.
broke out the champagne.
311 is a joke, aka the runaround.
despite an intense dislike for the politics of bloomberg, the laughable buffoons (of the patterson level) they are parading for the candidacy may be a worse kick in the ass for ourselves.
jesus, thank god. hopefully people are waking up. get that asshole out of office, please.
I'll never know what to make of our mayor.
"Eh"? There's got to be more umbrage than that. This guy burned up everything we had to gentrify as much of the city as possible and leave its middle class stranded and under fire. It's time to come down on this clown like a construction crane.
Word.
