Mayor: Holocaust Memorial Should Honor Non-Jewish Victims

060909park.jpg Mayor Bloomberg has dipped his oar into the hubbub over whether a Holocaust memorial in Brooklyn should honor non-Jewish victims of Nazi atrocities. Yesterday Assemblyman Dov Hikind held a protest at the memorial in Sheepshead Bay to protest the Parks Department's plans to commemorate all Nazi victims, including the disabled, homosexuals, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses and political prisoners. Hikind deems the Holocaust "a uniquely Jewish event" and says "these people are not in the same category as Jewish people with regards to the Holocaust." But yesterday Bloomberg backed the expanded memorial, calling it appropriate because "we don't value one group more than any other." (He also noted that the memorial is outside Hikind's district and that the local Assemblyman, Steve Cymbrowitz, approved the changes.) When informed of Bloomberg's comment, Hikind promptly turned the debate into a Holocaust pissing contest, telling the Post, "I don't know how many people in his family died in the gas chambers. My grandparents, my uncles, my aunts [did]." Your move, Bloomberg!

It's ON! How does Hikind think he stands a chance against Bloomberg. The man can shut your ass down from 20 feet, biatch.

"I don't know how many people in his family died in the gas chambers. My grandparents, my uncles, my aunts [did]."

From what I've heard, his Gypsy grandparents, gay uncle, disabled aunt, and Jehovah's Witness cousin all [did].

For once bloomberg doesn't sound like an asshole, and he proves the case against hate crime legislation.

"we don't value one group more than any other."

Mike...when he's bad he's awful, but when he's good he's AWESOME.

"a uniquely Jewish event...these people are not in the same category as Jewish people..."

Um..................[vomits]..................Douche. Bag.

I can't be the only one who wishes Hikind parents went into the gas chambers.

Why should they have suffered for the sins of their demon spawn?

Bad argument by Hikind. Bloomberg's Jewish too. Surely he has family who were killed by the Nazis as well.

As a Jew with no ties to the Holocaust (my ancestors were not so kindly shown the way out of Eastern Europe circa 1880 & 1890), maybe I just don't understand Mr. Hikind's sentiment, but I don't see why the 5 million non-Jews don't count. The Nazis clearly persecuted Jews more singularly and aggressively than others, but a lost life to brutality and ignorance is a lost life.

Just as all the assholes in the Middle East don't believe in the Holocaust, perhaps Mr. Hikind shouldn't act as though the other 40% of victims don't deserve to be recognized for their suffering.

hikind is doing phenomenal PR work on behalf of jewish people everywhere.

"these people are not in the same category as Jewish people with regards to the Holocaust."

Wow...Hikind comes off as a first class racist.

what we need is a wise latina woman to straighten all this out.

we always get what we deserve in our politicians, a bunch of narcissistic self-righteous douches.

I hope Hikind sees the irony in classifying one ethnicity's suffering over another's. Also, really, tallying up how many of your immediate family was murdered in the Holocaust? This shit isn't a competition. Nobody would open a Holocaust museum/memorial/etc without having the majority of attention paid to the Jewish people and rightly so. It doesn't hurt anybody to remember the people who died alongside them, in the same manner.

Guess it's true that racists really do come in all shapes, sizes, religions...

Whatta douche.

So odd to root for the mayor...

Dov Hikind is doing his best to show the world that he is a piece of shit.

You know, some days I get so frustrated, I just want to go up to the closest jewish person and say, 'You can't understand this, it's a jewish thing,' and then slap him, just for my mental health. - Dov Hikind

The Holocaust ® is a reistered trademark of the Jewish faith.

Hikind needs to shut the hell up.

Signed,
a Jewish person

Religious fundamentalists of any stripe are narrow minded troublemakers. Dov you're minor leaguer.

In case anyone missed it, Ed Koch left a comment in the last post about this.

He said that the monument was NOT intended to be for Jewish victims only and should include everyone.

The Money has spoken. Hikind, get thee gone from here and STFU.

As a grandson of holocaust survivors, I'm siding with Uncle Dov on this one.

The majority of people sent to concentration camps were Jews, and they were kept separate from the gays, communists, and Roma inmates.

I feel that including other people in this memorial would diminish the story of my family's suffering, the same way that comparing Pol Pot and Saddam to the holocaust diminishes their story.

As for Dov Hikind, he is our Al Sharpton. When mainstream Jewish groups sit silent due to political correctness, he's out on the street protesting any real or perceived slight against my people.

Did you ever think that putting such an emphasis on your people diminishes their stories? Don't be so damned selfish.

By refusing to acknowledge and respect other victims, you are diminishing yourselves. Period.
