Surprise! The High Line is Open

Looks like the High Line opened to the public one day ahead of schedule! This park really knows how to keep us guessing. We headed over there earlier today, and will be updating with more photos soon—but why not go have a look for yourself?

  • It's undeniably lovely but in the way that leaves nothing to question. The absence of spontaneity or accident, the almost painful insistence on good taste—this is an experiment in transforming an exterior space into an interior space, and I suspect it will exert the same degree of surveillance and control. It's not that I feel any degree of nostalgia, no that's not true, I do miss the rough and ruined and think the City is poorer for it, but who exactly is insisting that the city treat itself like a woman addicted to plastic surgery? I'm growing tired of all these artificially smooth surfaces.

".....like a woman addicted to plastic surgery..."

    That's exactly it. Beautifully put.

Wheres the sign that says "Hey! Come skateboard all over me!" Great design on some of those benches.

Wow, what a difference from the deserted wasteland I remember. I'll definitely have to stop by. Too bad there's no solitude up there anymore. It was great when you could head up and have the entire High Line all to yourself.

  • Snoopy

It looks great now but time will take its toll on all those fine details.

Who is paying for the maintenance of this exercise?

  • yamon

Maintenance is covered by "Friends of the High Line", whom I must say have created a wonderful park. Love the sunset view from the recliners!! Thank You!!

I was able to stop by today and was very impressed. It feels very much like a rooftop garden.

  • mrguy

do they close and lock it up at night? seems like it could turn into a major homeless hangout.

  • gpoint

the staircases are caged with doors that lock

  • Mr Mel

Fear not, they'll find a way in. Then their advocates will claim discrimination.

looks great. however I was hoping it would be less concrete-y. really though I can't complain, it's a great success that it exists.

  • I agree, a little less concrete.

  • MonkeyButter

Yup! Those benches will make it super easy for little tykes to climb up and fall off the High Line, gold!

  • NannyState

Honestly, it looks great. We'll see how it holds up to the traffic but it's working for me...

  • Those benches look beautiful.
