Palin Nibbles the NY State 'Burbs All Weekend Long

The bustling tourism season is just getting under way up in Alaska, but this weekend The Last Frontier State has sent New York its biggest export over the last year: The Palin Family. Governor Sarah Palin has been zipping around the area over the last couple days with events planned in various suburbs and towns around the city, almost flirtatiously toying with the five boroughs.

Yesterday the town of Auburn found a way to connect themselves to the governor—by inviting her to celebrate the first ever "Founder's Day" in honor of their native son, William Seward, the former Secretary of State notorious for his "folly" in purchasing Alaska for the US. Palin marched in a parade through town and helped raise money for a Seward Museum they are trying to build.

Today Palin heads to some events a little closer to the city to help raise awareness for people with disabilities. She's taking part in a walk to raise money for Autism Speaks in Westchester this morning and will make her way out to Long Island this evening for an event for disabled children in St. James.

With Palin so publicly on the march, naturally her future political ambitions are a topic of discussion. Congressman Peter King told Newsday, "She's definitely a player. She has a real strong base of support." But when asked about any future presidential bid for Palin, Nassau County Democratic chair Jay Jacobs said, "There's just way too much baggage with her and I think that she's not taken seriously by the overwhelmingly majority of the electorate."

Palin certainly sounded like she was winning over the hearts of upstate New York. While she stopped by Seneca Falls on Friday, one local resident told a reporter, "She is basically as close to our class as anyone in politics."

Since when is Auburn a suburb of NYC? At roughly 300 miles away, it's a little far, don't you think? In fact, I don't think it's a suburb of anything. It's too far away from Syracuse for even them to claim it as a suburb.

Auburn is roughly the same distance from Syracuse as Hempstead is from Midtown. Everyone upstate drives -- 25 miles is still well within "suburb".

Hempstead is adjacent to Queens. A suburb is defined as a community just outside a city, in the strict sense of the word. Auburn is not just miles away from Syracuse, those miles are nothingness, just open roads. When a town and a city are that disconnected, the town is not considered a suburb of the city. Otherwise, you might as well consider all of Long Island a suburb of NYC, since most people there drive. LI may be suburbia, but it's not connected to NYC in a geopolitical sense. And many NYers, especially commenters here, would thank God for that.

old, bald guy in the last image has the look of death beneath those sunglasses.

he probably killed whoever was behind the camera.

A Democratic Party chair can't say anything nice about Palin. I am shocked, shocked I tell you! Can this guy say with a straight face that people take Joe Biden seriously at all?

If millions voted for the Obamessiah because they wanted to see someone like them in the White House, we can also get a throwback to Andrew Jackson type populism and elect a middle class woman to the White House. Don't be surprised when it happens.

Remember (as a famous movie reviewer found out) if you don't know anyone who votes Republican, it just means that you live in New York City.

P.S.
Palin and Giulani were at Yankee Stadium together. Giulani, Palin and the Yankees! The crowd at Gothamist must have their bile rising.

There are plenty of Republican voters in NYC, many are just afraid of being ostracized by admitting it.

She should leave Todd, move to Auburn with Levi, and start all over.

Why do Republicans just LOVE for their leaders to be super-dumb?

So that the "average Joe" can relate to them- and vote for them.

Oh yeah, she's DEFINITELY a player.
