Start with the offense. The loss of Carlos Delgado was huge and it exposed a mediocre squad. Beltran and Wright are having great years, Gary Sheffield has been a nice addition, but everyone else disappointed this year. Jose Reyes was having a bad year before he got hurt. Daniel Murphy looks like a player who played only one game in AAA before coming to the majors. Luis Castillo is Luis Castillo. There are too many dead spots in the lineup. And don’t blame the ballpark, the Mets actually hit better at Citi Field than on the road.
The rotation is an area of concern as well. Johan Santana has been wonderful, but behind him there are major problems. John Maine has been inconsistent and is complaining of shoulder tightness. Oliver Perez has been a disaster with Tim Redding not much better as a replacement for him. It speaks volumes that Livan Hernandez has been their second-best starter in 2009.
So, it’s up to Omar to fix this. He needs to go out and find a bat and he needs to figure out a way to fix the rotation. It won’t be easy, but the first two months of the seasons have shown us that the Mets need some reinforcements.

The Mets could easily be out of the race in a couple of weeks if there aren't some improvements. This week is critical...if we get shellacked by the Phillies and Yanks we might as well mail it in. The bright side is despite the weak lineup, we seem to play better against the better teams than vs. the Nats and Pirates of the world. Also, the Phillies are hardly unbeatable, and the rest of the division is under .500.

In early June? Not only won't it be easy, it'll be nearly impossible.
I could maybe see the Padres trading Peavy early, except that they've been on a good run lately so may not want to pull the trigger already. Other than that, a lot of teams will be on the buy/sell fence for a few weeks.
Maybe the Mets should be as well. With the current injury situation, there really is no good trade bait on the 25-man roster that they can spare. So, do you trade a prospect like Fernando Martinez in June? So confident already that this will be the year that you're willing to trade the future?
Easy to play armchair GM... so OK, realistically what moves would you make right now?
its june. it's way too early to be panicking. they're dropping some games they should be winning, but they're not letting the phillies get too far out in front, which is really THE only important thing til late august. there's still plenty of time for trades, plenty of time for reyes to heat up, etc. it does need to happen to be successful, but its not critical that it happen right this instant, they just need to tread water until we get some injured players back.
of course I wont be this calm if we miss the playoffs by 1 game again.
