Paterson Calls For State Investigation Into Slain Cop Shooting

2009_06_statep.jpg Yesterday, Governor Paterson announced that he will convene a state panel to investigate the "friendly fire" shooting that left an off-duty police officer dead after being fired upon by another cop. Paterson said, "We don't want to see this happen to any police officer of any color ever again. We want to try to put in protocols that prevent the shooting of police officers on or off duty who are trying to apprehend criminals."

Omar Edwards was killed over a week ago when chasing a man suspected of breaking into his car. Edwards, who had just completed his shift as a housing patrol officer in Harlem, chased the suspect with his gun drawn. A group of police officers saw the chase and one allegedly shouted at Edwards to drop his gun. But Edwards, who was black, may have turned, while still holding his gun—and officer Andrew Dunton, who is white, fired six times at him, hitting Edwards three times. Some witnesses say Dunton asked Edwards to drop his gun, though it's unclear whether Edwards heard the request in the evening din.

Paterson said that while there are relatively few friendly fire incidents statewide, he acknowledged, "Within that framework, a high percentage of African-American and Hispanic officers...were shot." He added, "We are handling this sensitively; there may be issues that involve race. We’re not discussing any institutional or direct racism." The NYPD said, "We’ll provide whatever assistance the governor needs."

According to the NY Times, the NYPD also provided a list of friendly fire shootings since 1930:

[NYPD spokesman Paul Browne] also disseminated a list of 10 police officers shot and killed by colleagues in cases of mistaken identity since 1930, and said they included five who were white, four who were black and one who was Hispanic. The list did not include Desmond Robinson, a black undercover transit officer who survived being shot by a fellow officer in a subway station in 1994. Nor did it include a 1992 case in which three white officers were wounded by police bullets in East Harlem.
The Reverend Al Sharpton said he would asked the U.S. Attorney's office for an investigation. Paterson said he might consider that, but "Right now I will rely on the district attorney of New York County, Robert Morgenthau, and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who are investigating this."

In other news, Miguel Goitia, the suspected car thief Edwards had been chasing, claimed he was beaten by Corrections officers at Rikers Island, who told him he killed a cop. WCBS 2 reports that the Corrections Department has no record of this: "If it did happen, [Correction Department spokesman Steven] Morello said he wishes Goitia would have told authorities. Inmates should always bring concerns to the attention of the jail management, he said."

So the governor is now listening to, and taking counsel from, the very same people who have used police tragedies in the past for their own political gain.

GOVERNOR PATERSON IS AN INCOMPETENT DISGRACE.

Who's the fat black guy standing to the right of Patterson, his new police advisor?

As sad as this story is for all involved, I have no idea why this is being seen as a race issue. First of all, that cop was an idiot for drawing his gun while chasing the burglar. Secondly, if over half of the cop who have been shot by other cops were white, then its obvious that friendly fire incidents in which black or hispanic cops are the victims are a systemic problem. I know that there are problems that still exist due to racism, but this doesn't seem to be one of them.

Who was that masked man?

Where is PBA President Pat Lynch?

Ummm. the PBA president is currently indesposed in a search for the criminal record of Officer Omar(Slain) to present at the press conference. ....And former mayor Guliani will be present to assist in the holding up of the papaer for the cameras.

of course, this isn't about race,
nothing is about race in the USA.
God Bless You Gov. Paterson.

You have to love Patterson. Talk about stepping into shit. If it wasn't for Spitzer doing what his little head told him to do, Patterson would still be wandering around Albany wondering what he should be doing to earn his keep.

When it comes to white vs black it always as to be about race thanks to people like Sharpton.

If a black police office did this to a white office everyone will be calling this an unfortunate sad accident.

No. They would reinstate the death penaly. Kill him then get all his family memebers fired from thier jobs. That would occur within a week after the incident. Then the reall hell would start.

his this happened to a white police officer in NYC?
a white officer in a "white" neighborhood/area.

I don't think there are that many white men running around with a gun drawn in a white neighborhood. If there was I am sure they would be shot also.

so that's a negative. negative on all points, white men don't run around with a gun out in a white neighborhood.
and they don't get shot.

I really don't hear a lot about of a bunch of white thugs running around busting into cars in the hood stealing shit and stuff. But I do hear a lot about the colored folk thugs doing that as a natural kind of orientation on getting it on. Kind of like their Bar mitzvah kind of thing.

I see Jackoff is Keepin' It Real (Stupid) as usual. Look, the guy got shot because he was running down the fucking street in plain clothes with his gun drawn which is AGAINST police standard operating procedure. No gun drawn, no tragedy.

As for Patterson, he's screwed both ways. A lot of blacks think he's been a disappointment as a "black" governor so this is probably just a lame duck effort to get back in with the "black community" even though he's been an anti-white racist prick since day one. I guess he didn't lower the bar enough and now he has to appear on stage with Fat Albert to redeem himself.

At any rate, his stupid ass will gone soon enough so I say let him have his dumbshow while he still has the stage.

Running around plain clothes with a drawn gun, then turning on a pack of cops?
I think only Superman would survive, and not because he's white.
