Happy National Doughnut Day! What this means for you is, of course, free donuts—and Consumerist points out that free donuts are non-caloric and guilt free. Ah, sweet little lies. It's too bad the Doughnut Plant doesn't seem to be participating in today's events, but there are two ways to get your free fix. Head to the one surviving Krispy Kreme at 2 Penn Plaza and you will get a free donut with no purchase necessary, barring any Kentucky Fried riots. Since business isn't doing so well, however, you may want to get a little something extra while you're there. Meanwhile, over at one of the many Dunkin' Donuts in the city (where they announced a new Toffee donut today) you can get a free donut with the purchase of any beverage.

There's another Krispy Kreme on the LIRR level of Penn Station. The one mentioned above (2 Penn Plaza) is on Amtrak level.
Excellent. And now, at this moment, I'm upset that there are no Dunkin Donuts within a 15-block radius of me...though I suppose the walk to go to one would help offset the donut.
Probably not, Jen, you'd have to walk at a decent pace for half an hour to burn off one plain donut - no glaze, no cream, no jelly, no sprinkles, no nuthin'.

Worth it? Not unless it's from Voodoo Donut in Oregon.
"Help offset" I said! But you're right—you've shamed me into going to the gym today AND eating fresh fruit for my sugar jones.
Quick calculations for JC to justify eating a free donut:
Nearest free donut shop is 20 blocks away = approximately 1 mile if they're north/south block lengths assuming a block length is 1/5th of a mile.
The round trip is 40 blocks = 2 miles
At an average pace of 4mph (normal pace for NYers, speed walking to the rest of the country!) that would take about 30 minutes.
So actually YES, you CAN burn off the calories from a plain donut (185 calories).
According to Dunkin Donut and Krispy Kreme facts, most of the specialty donuts are 250-300 calories. You can burn the rest off by organizing an office olympics!
Jibs, I so love that you did the maths on that. Kudos.
I had the energy to do it by eating a jewish pumpernickel doughnut with vegetable cream cheese, free, courtesy of my company!
Office Olympics: Sterling idea. Must collect yogurt tops for medals...
D'oh, I meant assuming a block length is 1/20 of a mile! 1/5th of a mile = east/west.
dunkin donuts are not worth the calories and fat...you're better off finding the Krispy Kreme place.
Had to pay for my donuts at the Gail Ann donuts in Arlington and from Lyndell's Bakery in Somerville. Both were worth the cost.
