Brazilian air force officials say that debris found in the Atlantic Ocean does not belong to Air France Flight 447, which disappeared after departing Rio de Janeiro for Paris on Sunday night. Brigadier Ramon Borges Cardoso said, "It has been verified that the material did not belong to the plane. It is a pallet of wood that is utilized for transport. It is used in planes, but on this flight to Paris, there was no wooden pallet." Additionally, the oil slick seen in the water was not from the flight either—it was larger than the amount of oil from the flight. A French official said, "The clock is ticking on finding debris before they spread out and before they sink or disappear." The cause of the plane's disappearance hasn't been determined, but Airbus warned about "malfunctioning speed indicators" yesterday. And a Spanish pilot said he saw an "intense flash of white light, which followed a descending and vertical trajectory and which broke up in six seconds."

Hey, can anyone tell me when that film, I think it's called, "The Way We Go" opens? I haven't seen any info on it, especially on this blog.
there's a chance that the plane collided with a boat.
So they've found nothing related to the crash yet? It's pretty amazing to me that in this day and age with satellites and heat signature cameras and all that crap, we still can have these Bermuda Triangle incidents.
What would John Krasinski or Maya Rudolph think about this?
"All that crap" is pretty worthless in a huge expanse of open water. To this very day, ships much larger than the Airbus can still disappear without a trace. To paraphrase Dr. Robert Ballard, we know less about the depths of the oceans than we do about outer space. Remember, it took over a year to find the remains of Steve Fossett and his plane, and that was on land, not underwater.
Sounds like the plane and its passengers and crew are... LOST.
The similarities are nuts. Are we bad people for thinking about this?
The whole point of Lost was that the initial incident wasn't so incredibly far fetched. There's an incredible amount of trans-oceanic air travel and every 15 years or so something like this happens. So, while it isn't likely to happen to you, it isn't uncommon.
Haha, nice.
Dear Gothamist, I want you guys to make money and stay afloat so we can all bitch and be snarky in the comments section, but the whole border-the-entire-sit-with-a-clickable-ad thing is obnoxious.
luv,
jibbs
This was in response to Rocknrope's comment. I'm not laughing at the lost plane of course.
I don't what's more depressing, that this flight just vanished into the sea without a trace, or that the Atlantic is so fucking polluted that there is enough random debris and oil slicks floating around to confuse the salvage operation. We are fucked.
It is very disrespectful to the people who were killed in this tragedy by you making an envornmental political point. Please have some dignity.
I hope you are being sarcastic. Knowing you though, you are just being an illiterate asshole as usual.
85% of oil slicks in the ocean are naturally occuring. Everytime you resort to childish name calling it is like an admission of being wrong. Again, please have some dignity you will feel much better about yourself.
"On Wednesday, searchers recovered two debris fields and had identified the wreckage, including an airplane seat and an orange float as coming from Flight 447. Officials now say that none of the debris recovered is from the missing plane."
"The Brazilian air force is now saying that debris picked up Thursday near where officials believe Air France Flight 447 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean is not from the plane. Officials are saying it’s “sea trash” and not part of the jet that apparently went down with 228 people on board."
I suggest you shut the fuck up without further embarrassing yourself.
People have lost their lives and families have been ruined and all you can talk about is Brazilian air force speculation of some fucking "sea trash". Disgraceful.
Please go back to elementary school and pay attention to Reading Comprehension.
Maybe if you cut down on your consumption of snickers bars there would be less trash in the ocean.
Wait, feeling bad about the extreme pollution in our oceans which is hampering the salvage operations which will bring closure to hundreds of family members is ... what? POLITICAL???
Please, go take a long swim in that polluted sea, and make it snappy.
Look at the bright side: if it's that polluted, maybe there weren't any sharks around to eat the passengers.
I don't know about that, longacre. This is a disturbing simulation of the latest theory.

Wow. I was dead wrong.
I don't what's more depressing, that this flight just vanished into the sea without a trace, or that the Atlantic is so fucking polluted that there is enough random debris and oil slicks floating around to confuse the salvage operation.
What depresses me is that a plane carrying 200+ people crashes into the ocean, and your response is to be concerned about the cleanliness of the ocean. I hope you die in an environmentally friendly way.
One concern does not preclude another, you complete and utter imbecile. You should go back to school along with "Dead Himmler."
you should learn some manners, or at least better insults than "go back to school."
228 people dead, a polluted ocean hindering efforts to resolve the mystery of their deaths, and you get worked over insults that aren't harsh enough for your taste? Please, go to an echo chamber and start talking to yourself. Preferably in an area which has loads of avalanches ......
While SP and I disagree on a great many things, you're way off base with your criticism. The very sentence you quoted starts with, "I don't know what's more depressing." Implicitly, both the loss of life and the pollution are depressing. If you want to get upset about something, why not rail against those who still flippantly compare this with a fictional TV show. This isn't a script. A lot of people are dead and may never be found. But they won't let that ruin their snarky fun.
At least you know how to read. That's a redeeming quality. And fwiw I've found that in recent threads you've been quite sensible.
Airbus has now issued another advisory to pilots, this time about flying through storms. They are freaking out about this crash. Remember that A300 that went down in Rockaway? Crappy composite tail section came off. The relay about this plane "breaking up" has me wondering if they had a similiar issue...
The AA 587 crash wasn't so much the result of the tail section itself being crappy, but that the rudder controls were built in such a way that the pilot pushing them too hard moved the rudder with enough force to snap off the tail. Newer Airbus planes are (supposedly) built in a way that prevents this.
Presuming Airbus is not hiding any defects they know about in regards to their speed sensors, the advisory they issued could really be applied to any aircraft from any manufacturer because they all work the same way.
I feel very bad for the people involved and grow more and more concerned about whats happening with real flight safety as we seem to waste most of our collective time and money worrying about some far less likely terrorist bull but the fact that there is so much random junk floating around in the ocean is disturbing and that thought did come to mind when I heard about this.
