Have Stolen Gym Member ID & Bolt Cutters, Will Rob

2009_05_blackbery.jpg Police arrested a suspected serial gym robber who hit New York Sports Club and Crunch locations in Manhattan. The NY Post reports that John Perez of Queens "would usually get past security by using a gym member's ID that he had previously stolen...Then he would sneak inside the locker room, use a bolt cutter to break into lockers and grab wallets, cash, credit cards, ID's, Blackberrys and cell phones, sources said." The 23-year-old allegedly stole from the West 82nd Street Crunch three times and the Christopher Street location once, while also hitting the Chelsea, Upper East Side and Upper West Side branches of New York Sports Club. Perez was charged with 10 counts of burglary. Some robbers do like gym lockers: One man arrested earlier this year for a rash of NYSC robberies was arrested in 1979 for stealing from a Jack LaLanne gym in the Bronx.

I'm glad to read about this.

I had 100 dollars stolen from my wallet at the Crunch on Lafayette. I dunno how someone got into my locker.

Crunch on West 83rd St. And that's creepy.

My local Equinox has had a rash of locker room robberies. Not surprising, as desk staff at my Equinox is often too busy chatting with each other to properly check the ID's of all of the folks filing in.

And a lot of the boys like to sneak into Equinox not so much to rob, but to play with the other boys in the showers and sauna.

Love the graphic Jen.

Drewo, which Equinox? I go to 20th & Broadway, feeling too cheap to get a better lock than my combo masterlock, but I guess the ripoff membership should make me realize that paying 10 bucks for a new one is a better idea

Thanks for noticing—that makes the time I spent Photoshopping it worth it!

The new Equinox gyms have lockers with a digital keypad as an extra security measure

Don't these gyms have those little lockers where you just store your keys, wallets, cellphones, etc near the front entrance while you put the rest of your stuff in a locker in the locker room? They should.

Happened to me at the Hoboken North gym on a Saturday morning last year. Mad at myself cause I could tell a guy was casing the locker room when I was in there. I think the girl at the front desk was in on it too cause she could have cared less when I reported it and told me I couldn't call the cops since there was no evidence that my stuff was stolen... cell phone and wallet which I rarely kept in my gym locker. I called the cops and called NYSC corporate to complain about the lack of concern from the staff. No one gave a shit.

The front desk staff must be asleep at the wheel most of the time. NYSC members should have photo in their member information. When they scan your id at the door they are supposed to check to see if the id matches the person presenting it. Like drewo said earlier, they don't give a shit. They probably get a cut of the loot stolen. Or they are too busy flirting with someone else...
