This is something you don't read about every day, unless it's in the Onion: a New York record store has managed to keep its doors open! The Daily News reports that Park Slope's only record store will remain open for at least another three years; "The legendary Fifth Avenue Record and Tape Center has found a new home just three doors down from its current spot at 439 Fifth Ave" where the owner will be evicted from by the end of June (despite never being late on his rent). 72-year-old owner Tony Mignone told the paper, "I'll give it another shot. I think it'll be good, because I could fix it up the way I want it... although this is nice over here. But the landlord is jerking me around." Opening 38 years ago and keeping loyal employees and customers since then, it's nice to see this story have a happy ending. One customer said, "They don't have these types of businesses anymore. All of them went out 30, 40 years ago. At least Tony maintains some of the splendor of the old days." Indeed.

This is not Park Slope's only record store. Music Matters is right on 7th Avenue.

That said, this is wonderful news!

More hipster news that useless to the rest of us i-tune using crowd. These record and video (Kim's) relics need to be cleared away like CBGB.

By the way, Jen, where the update on the hipster grifter? You gonna toss her aside like the Subway Romeo?

you cannot be serious. kim's video was, hands down, the best video rental store in the greater ny area. they had everything from art house to mainstream comedies. your 'i-tune using crowd' sounds more hipster than these record and video stores.

try taking out your white earbuds and looking around once in awhile.

Kim's was great back in my college days for rare and weird gems before the Internet. Now can you honestly say that there are videos that can only be found in Kim's that you can't find online?

yes. tons of them. many art-house, avant garde, indie, or shock cinema can be extremely hard to find, even on the internet.

There's a ton of stuff that Kim's ahd that isn't available through iTunes or NetFlix. Kim's was terrific. I worked the counter at the Kim's on Avenue A in the early 90s. It was great.

most importantly, does he still sell tapes?

Not to be an ass about this, but that quote could just have easily been taken from a shop owner in the South talking about desegregation. Just because something is 'old school' does not make it cooler or better. Either adapt or fall under the heel of those who have.

Huh, I used to live just down the street from that place. Always assumed it was a mob front/tax dodge just like most of the other never-patronized stores on 4th and 5th. Good for them I guess.

as kid I bought my rap tapes there - I'll never forget getting a slick tape there...then playing it at home....the 'dirty' one sticks in my mind till this day... 'he opened it up and what did he find, crabs with spears and drums saying heya, heya...haha.

This place has always been shady - I remember about 8-9 years ago you could go in there and buy an entire binders worth of CD's which were obviously stolen from someone's car. A shady Mcshadester of a neighborhood guy.

To Mr Slander McSlander, as a former employee of Tonys I personally put the raqndom cd's that people sold w/o jackets or cases into those binders so check your facts b4 u slander a church going guy who for 38 yrs has been bringing breakfast to the homeless guys @ st Thomas.
