Brooklynites rejoice: the new free ferry between your borough and Governors Island, that has been in the works for over a year, will be in operation come June 6th. Lost City points to a letter sent out by State Senator Daniel Squadron, stating he'll be on the inaugural launch this Saturday at 11 a.m. "The ferry will leave Fulton Ferry Landing every hour, every Saturday when there is programming scheduled for Governors Island. It will stop at Governor's Island and Battery Park in Manhattan." So it should be smooth sailing for Brooklynites who wants to attend this year's Figment extravaganza, which takes place on the weekend of June 12th and will include the unveiling the new mini golf course. And don't forget about all the other events the island has to offer this summer, including a new Water Taxi Beach of its own (opening on July 4th).

This is fantastic. Anyone know if the ferry will allow bicycles? I know Governor's Island is bike friendly.
Thanks,
Anita
Visitors are also permitted to bring their own bikes from Friday – Sunday when the Island is open to the public. On Fridays, adult and children's bikes are free. On Saturdays and Sundays, adult bikes can be rented for $15 for two hours. Bike and Roll™ also rents four-person bike surreys, children's bikes, children’s bike trailers, wagons and other bike accessories.
How about Gov. Island ferry service from somewhere in southern Brooklyn? Anyone near Fulton landing in Brooklyn only has to extend a subway trip by one or two stops to get near the terminal in lower Manhattan. If one is coming from farther away in Brooklyn, the advantage of having two ferry stops in viewing distance of each other across the water seems like a throwaway distinction.
