Bike Fashion Contest Tries Making Cycling Stylish

"We have to make bicycling fun and elegant, which it is not yet in New York!" declares Renaud Dutreil, a big shot at luxury goods conglomerate LVMH. Dutreil rides a bike to his office on East 57th Street almost every day, and he thinks more people would do likewise if there was only a fashion alternative to the dominant DIY style of ripped jeans, tattoos, and Bushwick-bound butt cleavage.

So he teamed up with designer Donna Karan and DOT officials to sponsor a competition among students at the Fashion Institute of Technology, challenging them to design a poncho, a jacket and a travel bag for cycling that didn't sacrifice style for safety or utilitarianism. According to the Times, the winning designs by Jessica Velasquez from Queens, will be made into prototypes by DKNY. Her "Tech-Chic" travel bag, for instance, folds neatly into an envelope while providing plenty of space to stash accessories like high-heel shoes. Now someone just needs to design a sexy bike helmet that won't ruin carefully coiffed hair, right ladies?

LVMH is also a main sponsor of Summer Streets, which is coming back this year.

"We have to make bicycling fun and elegant..."

From the looks of those drawings, they have failed...

spectacularly

This shit looks like they stole it from a 80's sci fi movie. oh yeah, Bladerunner. C'mon, to be stylish all you need is a amsterdam bike or a vintage raleigh with a brooks saddle and just wear clothes that you'd wear to an opening of a art gallery cocktail party. that's it.

There is nothing more stylish than having no irises in your eyes.

That's the result of repeated taserings during Critical Mass rides.

Good grief. These are hideous, and not at all fun or elegant. I'd never ride in that uncomfortable looking garb.

All you need to be elegant on a bike is a nice flowy scarf and sandals.

Skinny jeans are..."elegant"?

Cycling has already been made stylish by many people/companies. For example, Chrome (http://www.chromebagsstore.com/) has been doing "stylish/functional" for a while now.

If it weren't for the headline I would have no idea that these clothes had anything to do with cycling.
In fact, I am still not quite convinced.

Gee wizz, people aren't cycling to the office because they don't have the right outfit? Get out of here. I always thought it was because they're nervous about that getting killed by a truck thing. Or their commute is from the ass end of brooklyn to midtown, not a quick little 2-3 mile jaunt. But now with a cute bag, they're going to totally be into it.

How about a contest to design a stylish *helmet*????
