Justice Department Stands Up for Saudis in 9/11 Lawsuit

053109obamabow.jpg Less than a week before President Obama's visit to Saudi Arabia, the Justice Department has filed a brief before the Supreme Court urging justices not to hear a lawsuit brought by families of some of the 9/11 victims against the Saudi royal family. The lawsuit, which was formally filed by the families' insurance companies, contends that members of the House of Saud helped finance Al Qaeda preceding the 9/11 attacks. A district court threw out the lawsuit, finding that the Saudi royal family has legal protection under the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act. The Justice Department says their filing had nothing to do with the President's upcoming visit, and was just "coincidental." (A spokesperson explains that the brief had to be filed soon because the Supreme Court is deciding whether to hear the case before their June recess.) Kristen Breitweiser, a leader of the families, tells the Times, "I find this reprehensible. One would have hoped that the Obama administration would have taken a different stance than the Bush administration, and you wonder what message this sends to victims of terrorism around the world."

While I understand Obama's desire to move forward, and deal with the problems Bush caused for us today, America deserves a thorough examination of what influence the Sauds, and their business partners in Texas, had to do with the attacks.

I hope the Supreme Court rules in favor of the families. The Sauds are too intertwined in American business and politics to be seen as outside US jurisdiction. Especially in this case.

WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! We are all being royally fucked by our leaders, and distracted by mainstream media. Now is the time for revolution.

I'm all for a Congressional examination into the influence of Saudi money, but we need to keep our heads here. FSIA, simply put, is a waiver of the sovereign immunity of states, not individuals. I'm disappointed in Ms. Breitweiser's association with the District Court's decision and Bush Administration policy. FSIA has been around since the 1970s and has never been used to attach liability to specific individuals. Regardless of what administration is in office, the State Dept and DOJ have maintained this application because the statute represents a codification of restrictive state immunity as accepted by the world community as part of international customary law.

C'mon people. Anyone who's ever seen Lethal Weapon knows about Dee-Plo-Matic Ee-Mun-ity.

Simple: oil stays below $50 a barrel or you are totally liable, two-faced assholes.

However, the price starting to rise again and we should all be concerned.

It's the same media that NEVER mentioned Muslims' hatred of Israel as a possible motive for 9/11.
