New York in the 1940s

We've seen New York City in the 1930s, the 1970s, the 1980s, and just about every other era. Here are some more images, this time from the 1940s (see the full set here); and guess what, one of the bars in this gallery is still open for business!

#10 and #11 are by the photographer Weegee, I believe. Gothamist (and the person posting them on Flickr) should be giving these photographers credit...

Very cool pics. I think that's Madonna making out in the movie theater lol.

The Bernard Baruch Houses was supposed to be an improvement? Give me pre-war "slums" over post-war human warehouses anytime.

Walking down Hoyt Street in Brooklyn it's depressing to imagine what was lost between Wyckoff and Douglas when the Gowanus Houses were built to "improve" the neighborhood.

LOVE these photos. Nice post Jen. The Billie Holiday shot is my favorite.

The peep show shot is priceless. Every stereotype noted.

Look at the size of that portable radio in the Central Park shot. Probably AM and SW banded.

What is the original source of these images? I've noticed quite a few people on Flickr scanning pictures from books and claiming "All Rights Reserved" but never giving any attribution.

Love pictures of old New York City! Looking at those pictures presents an eerily feeling knowing those people are most likely dead.
