The new, car-free Broadway blocks of Times Square are still being appraised by pedestrians, drivers, and pundits alike. But one thing they can all agree on: It's quite a sight. On Panoramas.dk, there's a 360-degree image taken from Duffy Square (on top of the new TKTS proscenium) by Jook Leung—check it out here (the above image doesn't do it justice). Update: As eagle-eyed readers noticed, this panorama looks like it was taken before the car-ban went into effect but it was taken on Sunday (here's another shot from Sunday); from the TKTS steps, it looks like this on Memorial Day.
And Panoramas.dk's Hans Nyberg also links to a panorama of Strøget Copenhagen at Amergertorv Square, which opened in 1962 and is the "world's oldest and longest pedestrian street." Nyberg adds, "Today every city in Denmark small or large has a car free zone in the central areas."

Isn't that the wrong avenue that's blocked off? The left side of that picture is 7th Avenue and the right is Broadway...
That picture was taken the day before the traffic shutdown. Seventh Ave was closed because of a street fair. Benny's right, the part that's "closed" now has cars in that picture.
Excellent eyes, Benny and Kelisem. I was swept up by the panorama-ness.
looks so classy. all they need is a cheesesteak/sausage van.
Oh it's a breath of fresh air isn't it!!!
what is this denmark thing of which you speak? and why do we care about it in regards to our beloved new yawk?
To answer your question:
Bloomberg hired some hippy from Denmark who wants to turn the Greatest City in the World into Copenhagen: a city whose chief tourist attraction is a statue of a mermaid, whose greatest author writes fairy tales, and whose culinary paradigm is pickled food on dry bread.
This is what DOT Diktator Sadik-Khan and her minions are emulating!
Then move to a better one if that's your attitude.
Great job Jook!!
I hope they rip up the road and plant grass on Broadway before the next mayor opens it back up. It still seems to temporary.
There won't be a "next mayor." At least not for a long time. With term limits extended, Bloomberg will run this year. Then he'll get it extended again in 2013, and 2017...
Jook Leung does good work, but I miss his Quicktime VR panoramas. These Flash panoramas just don't seem as smooth.
Police commish Ray Kelly is in the third panorama.
Just add a level or two, escalators, and some withering Ficus trees and turn it into a fucking shopping mall already.
