At least it's not the Scientologist's with their stress tests. This group of Mennonites were spotted singing to straphangers at the Broadway stop today, and it's not the first time. They've been singing down there for years, here's a video from 2007. The group is most likely local and from the Manhattan Mennonite Fellowship... but do they have a permit?

Oh, I LOVE the Polyphonic Spree!
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
This is a scene from the movie, The Village, by M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong
"... Jacob and his followers split from the Mennonite church. Amman's followers became known as the Amish." Wikipedia
I had no idea that there exists a group that is even more plain than the Amish. I see these people around Wall Street too. Wtf do they want?? Spooky
They want your soul, of course.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
My grandparents, who are also Mennonite, would call those Mennonites the Plain People. Not all Mennonites look Amish; most are just regular people.
Until they rip off their human masks and reveal their true alien identity, tentacles and all.
I would rather see them than the usual human vermin hugging the walls begging for scraps
This was at Union Sq btw. I walked right by them, but you can tell from the subway signs in the top right too.
OK people, let me drop some knowledge on you. Those are indeed Mennonites. However, I can promise you they are not from Manhattan Mennonite Fellowship. These are members of a "plain" group. MMF members would not be recognized as different by their dress and would be more likely to be listening to their mp3 player while typing on a crackberry than singing to passersby.
My guess is that these folks are from PA and probably from a group known as "Horning" Mennonites after the name of the bishop who started the group.
Another bit of knowledge for you. Did you know there are Mennonite groups in NYC worshiping in Spanish, English, Garifuna and several other languages?
There, now you know!
Where's Randy Quaid?
I was along with the group. We represent the Pilgrim Mennonite Conference, primarily from Lebanon PA. Our youth enjoy coming to the city to share our faith in Christ. If you have any questions, feel free to forward them to me at steve@pilgrimministry.org
