No "Mayor Weiner" for NYC: Congressman Drops Out of Race

052609weiner.jpg After suspending his mayoral campaign in March, representative Anthony Weiner has decided to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination, according to a scoop in City Hall News. Democratic Party officials have been increasingly throwing their support behind Controller William Thompson—with the notable exception of Long Island Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat, who today announced her endorsement of Mayor Bloomberg. Weiner spent Memorial Day weekend attending three parades, a burst of activity that could have been interpreted as campaign appearances, but a source tells City Hall News that Weiner will formally announce his withdrawal tomorrow. His exact reasons for dropping out are not yet known, but Bloomberg's God-like affluence certainly played a factor. Though the Post had been gleefully attacking the six-term congressman in recent months, it's doubtful their smears broke his will to run; as the Daily News puts it, Weiner "wakes up in the morning looking for a fight." His withdrawal leaves just Thompson and Council Member Tony Avella to fight over the Democratic nomination.

Good move. He couldn't beat Bloomberg anyway and he's building a good reputation in the House.

Tony Avella is running for mayor

too bad bloompolean scared him away; he was the only one willing to get in the mud with him.

he's gonna run his third term by wire from his compound in bermuda, watch his buddies get fatter during this downturn that only he can solve.

That's just great. Thanks Mr. Weiner for thinking about your own success as NYC is swayed by monetary and political power to vote Mr. Bloomberg into office again. The Democratic party in NY sucks, period.

Tony Avella is running for mayor. Lets hope he can break through to the majority weak minded New Yorkers.

Democrats are weak because they don't stick together.
Guliani was no billionaire.
Republican in red states unite and keep electing themselves into office. How else can we explain why liberal NYC might very well elect a Republican mayor for the fifth time in a row?

Term "Republican" here is not what you think it means. Mayor Bloomberg is a Republican by convenience. The Democrat politicians don't support anyone who wont pay them off.

I'm talking about the voters, not the politicians. There are over 5 registered Democratic voters for every single registered Republican in NYC. With just a little loyalty, it shouldn't be a contest.

There is also Reverend Billy Talen.

Did I sat I hate Bloomie?
Please someone kick ass.
Anthony, someone, save us
poor folk from the power
monger.
My area in Brooklyn is torn-up,
filthy, crime-filled, trees all
about to fall over, did I say FILTHY,
quality of life problematic,
and confused.
Thank you Mr. Mayor...
(I use the term loosely)
Run for another term you
paid for it with my blood
and sweat.
OH, did I say I hate Bloomie.
