Improvised Explosive Device Set Off At Upper East Side Starbucks

2009_05_starexplo.jpg Earlier this morning, around 3:30 a.m., an explosion was reported outside of a building at Third Avenue and 92nd Street. The NYPD is conducting an investigation; according to WCBS 2, "Officials tell CBS 2HD it wasn't a bomb that went off, but an improvised explosive device. The device was planted on a bench outside the Starbucks."

All of the building's residents were evacuated, as well as those of neighboring buildings. There were no reported injuries, but the windows of the ground-level Starbucks were blown out. Residents told WABC 7 they thought it might be a gas explosion or truck running into a building.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly spoke about the incident—he said the device seemed to be a "low" explosive—and commented about whether it was related to the incidents outside the British consulate in 2005, Mexican consulate in 2007 (grenades), and Times Square recruiting station last year, "The similarity is the time. The Mexican consulate, the British consulate, the Times Square bombing event at the recruiting station, we have this event. They all happened between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that's the immediate similarity we are looking at."

However, he added, "We will be checking cameras in the area. Right now there are no reports of anyone on a bicycle," referring to how in the three earlier incidents, a person on a bicycle was spotted, "Obviously it is a cause for concern, but we are going to do an in depth investigation. Starbucks has been victimized in the past in other cities. So we are looking into that issue as well."

Anyone know where Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney were last night?

Why would Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney blow up a symbol of capitalism and globalization? I know you're just kidding but your joke misses by a mile.

no it didn't miss it ruffled your feathers dickhead

Insulted you heroes Waaa wwwa waaa

i went to a starbucks, bought a four dollar latte.
went to the restroom, there was dookie smeared on the wall.

i pissed on the floor...

starbucks is really just a public restroom that serves coffee.

I dropped into the Fartbucks on 9th and 48th a few months ago and there was a dirty syringe on the floor. There happened to be an employee on his way into the bathroom and I told him to watch out for the dirty needle and he reacted like "so?".It was probably his.

So I guess this counts as an attack on a Jewish and WASP temple.

I'm not disturbed that they blew up an empty Starbucks, just that it woke the neighbors.

When exactly did an IED stop qualifying as a bomb? Was this an IED made without explosives? Did it still blow up? Sounds like a bomb to me.

That thing was loud as hell. My roommate and I both woke up not knowing what to do. But then we went to sleep....

What i'm most mad about is that that wooden bench is now gone...

I hate it when language is manipulated as a political tool. A bomb is a bomb.

Given the freaks that apparently populate the comment threads on this blog, I trust the pertinent IP addresses have been forwarded to the FBI.

it's M80 season. happy upcoming fourth of July.

This has CIA/NSA written all over it.

Surprised this doesn't happen more often. There are waaaaay too many loonies out there.
