Traffic enforcement agents are used to getting sneering looks and jeered at just for doing their jobs, writing tickets to illegally parked vehicles. But one man in The Bronx yesterday took his protest of an offense to an offensive level when he got into his violating vehicle (double parked) and just rode right over the officer who was writing him up. The man's 2002 black Ford Taurus was double parked on Jerome Avenue in Bedford Park when he hustled into it and drove into NYPD Traffic Officer Sabrina Torrez, running over her legs. The 26-year-old officer and mother of a toddler is in guarded condition at St. Barnabas Hospital after being treated for broken legs and head trauma. Police are looking for help identifying the suspect caught on a surveillance video that can be seen here. Update: Police arrested Andrew Grullon, 26, for felony assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

She was just doing her job. If you want to complain speak to the city council and Bloomberg.
as paul newman said in cool hand luke, 'calling it a job don't make it right'.
i side with the guy from the bronx.
Problem is, there's a video showing that the guy was (1) double parked and (2) not even IN the car... it shows him running to the car, which he has left double parked on the street, and he hops in and runs her over.
"i side with the guy from the bronx."
Right. So if you had parked on that street and returned to your car to find that this guy had double parked and blocked you in, you'd side with him on that too? Or you only agree with him on unprovoked violent assaults on women?
Yeah, avoiding a ticket was worth that woman's legs. Jerk.
Hang The Prick on 42nd & video it for youtube.
There really is a reason people think that they can assault traffic cops, and it is that they are unarmed. If traffic cops were armed, then this crap would not happen. Period. That the city insists on dividing their police into two divisions is a shame. They don't want to pay the traffic police what they pay the regular police, the regular police will not even be bothered with traffic enforcement even when they see something and they have nothing else to do. Hell, I see the blue and whites violating every traffic law in the books every day. No exaggeration. Blowing through stop signs at 2 a.m is a regularity where I am. Ridiculous and sad, as it seems that the traffic division suffers so much assault because the general populace is unafraid of any reprisal.
I've lived in many cities with two forces, but they are usually a police(city) and sheriff(county). But, both forces carry guns. We have an armed police force who don't care about traffic violations because they have better things to do, and an unarmed traffic enforcement division who are repeatedly assaulted because they don't have enough immediate muscle to deal with the thugs who run them over.
Are you suggesting that traffic agents should be able to carry firearms? Are you out of your liberal mind? Maybe if traffic agents didn't care so much about meeting their quota they would use proper tactics and not stand in front of a car they're ticketing, while its driver is behind the wheel. If anything the Traffic Agents should be disbanded, but they bring in money for the city, hence assaulting them is a felony. Meanwhile, if you break an auxiliary cop's face, it's still a misdemeanor. Where's your bleeding heart for them?
It's interesting that you accuse me with no reason of being a liberal... last I checked, the libs were looking to limit gun use (except among the criminals). You are simply an idiot. Read again what I said, think about it, and then come back in a few hours with a more cogent response and I will debate the specifics of my post. Standing in front of a car is the only recourse these folks have. It is the criminals who are allowed to run them over WITH NO RECOURSE who are the problem.
I have no doubt at all that there could be an attitude problem on the part of any law enforcement officer in any department in this or any other city. However, that does not give anyone permission to assault that officer, just as you would not have permission to assault your boyfriend or anyone else. Assault from both results in dual arrests.
Are you out of your liberal mind?
I don't think that word means what you think it means.
"There really is a reason people think that they can assault traffic cops, and it is that they are unarmed. If traffic cops were armed, then this crap would not happen."
They're not armed because they're not cops. The terms "traffic cop" and "traffic police" in your post are inaccurate (as is the use of "NYPD Traffic Officer" in the Gothamist post). She is a Traffic Enforcement Agent, a civilian, not a traffic cop. If she were a cop, she'd carry a gun.
Bus drivers get assaulted, should they be armed, too?
You or I may, too be assaulted, though we are not invested with enforcing any law. So, there is a big problem with your logic.
I don't see any connection between that obvious fact and any logic expressed in my post. My point was simply that arming civilian traffic agents to reduce the possibility that they will be assaulted while doing their jobs makes no more sense than arming bus drivers for the same reason.
i hate those guys, this happen to me a few times, i was in my car moving it, saw the lady come from behind and step in front of my van and ticketed me. i wrote back a not guilty plea but their new system sucks, there is no way to plea in person. on that form.
Yeah, traffic agents have a habit of walking in front of moving cars. Stop blocking traffic, douchebag.
I feel for the lady being run over...that shouldnt have happened, I hope she gets better.
I will also say though that there is a place reserved in hell for peoples whos job it is to fck with thier fellow man, like these traffic cops, and even regular cops. saying its a job, or that youre just following orders doesnt clear your slate. Youre still helping to make the world a worse place, and for that I've got sympathy
Or... people who double park are making the world a worse place, and those enforcing the laws meant to prevent it are attempting to make it better.
nyc has turned summons into such a blatent way to make money its impossible for me to consider it about making the world a better place. fck summons and the people who give em.
Obviously you are one of those people who double park, park in no-parking areas, park on crosswalks, park at corners so buses can't turn, park and not pay the meter. What do you want? A cookie for causing a traffic jam?
Hope they catch the SOB who did this. Whatever you may think of parking tickets and the people who write them, there's is no justification for this. Not to mention it's just plain stupid to the extreme. A parking ticket gets you a fine. Assault with a deadly weapon or even attempted murder gets you jail time. Is it worth it?
Exactly, if you don't like traffic cops, don't get caught. This guy is scum, he should never drive again.
"The man's 2002 black For Taurus"
Missing a letter here.
It seems they caught the fat bastard.
Yep: http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/99578/bronx-man-arrested-for-hit-and-run-of-traffic-enforcement-agent/Default.aspx
Had to think it wouldn't take long. She must have had at least a partial plate number.
Sociopathic douche-baggery and the American car culture go hand in hand.
Felony assault? I realize that's a serious crime, but it seems like attempted murder.
It seems like if you kill someone with a car in our society, you don't face much legal risk if you can claim it was an "accident," regardless of how reckless you were. And if you do it intentionally the charges are still not severe enough.
coulda just held her down n' pissed in her hair
Sending unarmed civilians into urban jungles is the equivalent of sending the Christians back into the lion's den to look for their hats... A scary proposition. I hope the agent recovers quickly. I also hope Jenny Craig revokes this guy's membership too...
