Who knew a movie about humanity's post-apocalyptic enslavement to murderous machines would be so heavy? This fourth addition to the "Terminator" series, which started with a bang in 1984, is as bleak as it is thrilling, and while the film's tone left us feeling morbidly obsolete, it does succeed in reinvigorating the sputtering franchise. Set in 2018, the movie stars Christian Bale as robot resistance fighter John Connor and Sam Worthington as a mysterious stranger who holds the key to humanity's survival. But can he be trusted? (A white hot Blair Williams thinks so!) While there's never a dull moment in director McG's big, noisy blockbuster, one wonders if American audiences will flock to a see such a dystopian depiction of the future, given our currently dystopian present. A chaser of bubblegum Star Trek might be advisable to wash down Salvation's bitter sauce.
Click on the stills above for more on this weekend's new releases and repertory screenings, which also include Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Burma VJ, The Girlfriend Experience, Dance Flick, O'Horten, Milton Glaser; To Inform and Delight, Kabei, The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story, New World Order, Ghosts of the Heartland, Easy Virtue, Eyes Wide Shut, and Warriors.

the ads for night at the museum are so painful. i'm used to seeing robin williams, eddie murphy, jim carrey, and adam sandler (all once comedy heroes of mine) in crappy, unfunny roles. but i'm really not ready to see adam sandler, hank azaria, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (the last two who wrote the movie) go down the toilet yet.
whoops that second adam sandler should be ben stiller.
Talk about CGI. That Terminator still shot looks like a screen capture from some PC shooter.
If a prostitute can take down the Steamroller, than a porn star can take down the Terminator.
Terminator was not that good. The biggest twist of the movie was given away in the trailer and promos a month ago. I saw it opening day and the theater wasn't even full. The only reaction it elicited were guffaws of disbelief at the current helmsmen of the franchise for shamelessly referencing the old movies in totally lame and inappropriate ways as if it somehow could endear this new waste of time to the audience. "I'll be back" Seriously? Seriously.
Pity they cancelled the Sarah Conner Chronicles. And no way I would follow this with Star Trek. That was an awful movie, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Instead of seeing any of those, "THE WARRIORS" is playing at Sunshine Cinema's midnight movies this weekend.
Uh, that's one of the films I listed and it's pictured above.
I heard Bernie Madoff makes a cameo in this movie.
I'm waiting for the day FRANCHISE REBOOT becomes the commercial kiss of death.
