Meghan McCain Urges NY State GOP To Support Gay Marriage

2009_05_megmccain.jpg Meghan McCain, daughter of the Senator and presidential candidate John McCain, has an opinion piece in the Daily News today. It's actually an open letter to NY State's Republicans, asking them to support the state's gay marriage legislation, "No matter how politically charged the discussions about marriage equality may get, the question is really a simple one: Do the rights and privileges we offer citizens include everyone in our country, or only some of us? I believe that allowing gays and lesbians the freedom to marry is an idea whose time has come... Equality under the law and personal freedoms are what make America the greatest country in the world, and they are core values that I hold as a Republican." McCain also Tweets, "I sincerely hope new york lawmakers will vote YES on the marriage equality bill!" If more than a few Republicans were to vote yes, the bill could possibly pass (the Senate's Democrats are split).

    Kudos to Meghan.

And kudos to New England and Iowa for supporting (civil) marriage. And to the Episcopal Church too.

I'm busy this summer officiating for couples who are coming to CT to wed from around the country, and they are bringing their families and friends along to celebrate. Congrats to all.

And to the marriage foes, and sexually phobic, please find something else to do with your time, because life's too short. Find love.

And remember, marriage is first a civil matter, as licenses are issued by and recorded in town halls not church halls. And in America, we have freedom of and freedom from religion.

    Thanks Meghan.

She's the hottest republican girl ever. No wonder they want to bounce her from the party: she doesn't pray for divine guidance to help her pull up her support panty hose.

  • Felix Hoenikker

The GOP needs to amputate the socially conservative, religious whackjob wing of their party like the gangrenous limb that they are.

  • Felix Hoenikker

    Nice cans.

  • airtech1

Meg needs to do what most Columbia grads do nowadays: live off daddy's trust fund for a few years, hit grad school, then become an unemployed I-Leaguer on the block.

  • Trilby16

What is she auditioning for??? She is everywhere!

  • felixthecat2

    So is Dick Cheney.

  • hotstepper

    gay marriage is so gay.

  • texinyc

    FTW

Funny how nobody has yet commented on the fact that the Democrats control both houses of the New York State legislature as well as the Governor's office yet they need Republican votes to get this passed. Why? Because not all of the Democrats are on board. But instead of thinking about that for a moment you guys focus on taking shots at Meghan McCain. Brilliant. And the bimbo comments? Very classy.

  • Qraymond

I don't see the point in calling her a bimbo-- it's not exactly the classiest way of making an argument. Indeed, it is not an argument at all.

On the other hand, it is laughable that this is the best the young GOP can do-- "We will not be as bigoted as our our hateful parents" is hardly the rallying cry of a revived, forward-looking party. They have no substantive healthcare proposal, a fiscal policy that goes out of its way to reward the top 1% and punish the rest of us, and a foreign policy record that speaks for itself in the scope and breadth of its spectacular array of failures.

While it is always a relief to see some semblance of humanity in the GOP's next generation, they're going to have to do a lot better than this if they are going to come out of the wilderness.

  • Sommelier

Ah... the optimism of youth! As dinosaurs like her father drive the GOP even deeper into the tar pits of anger, hate, resentment and fear she calls on them to stand up for equal rights for gay men & women?!?! What next? Healthcare for the sick? Education oportunities based on achievement & ability rather than wealth? What does she think this is? France?

  • BackStJoe

Since Republicans only seem to care about big buisness and money, they should be all for gay marriage! Tying the Knot is one of the biggest buisnesses out there. Think of the millions of additional dollars (and taxes) that gay marriage will bring to city buisnesses! The average wedding in NY is $22,000!

  • felixthecat2

MIchael Steele stated it would hurt small business because of gay marriage benefits coverage, I read an interesting article on how gay marriages will reduce the number of abort&ions. I had to spell abort&ions this way since the comment was not permitted when spelled fully.wth??

  • yg

Does that mean we should've kept slavery, since ending it hurt small business?

  • felixthecat2

I don't agree with Steele's stupid remarks, i just mentioned his argument. I mean then if he really thinks gay marriages would hurt small business then why not take a step further and eliminate marriage all together.

  • yg

How about we get the government out of marriage business completely? No gay, straight, multiple, any kind of marriage at all?

  • If this is the direction young Repubs are going to take, I'll stop hating on them so much.

  • Papercutninja

What PLANET AM I ON?? A repub for equal rights for all? OMG.

  • OTC

Republican?? She's not a Republican, her father is barely a Republican.

  • felixthecat2

Why is she talking to New Yorkers? Who the hell cares what this absent minded privileged bimbo thinks? Why didn't she speak up during her father's campaign or challenged Palin's homophobic comments?

  • KING

typical American Whore.. anything for that ca$h.

  • ANGRYGOD11

She represents young Republicans, with their blessing. The Republicans are paying her expenses to speak out and broaden the party's appeal to young voters driven away by people like Rush Limbaugh and her father.

She is a privileged bimbo, but she is doing a pretty good job, so far.

  • AlwaysSomething

"She represents young Republicans, with their blessing." Whoa...where'd you get that??? To most Republicans, no matter what age, Meghan McCain is a joke. She can't seem to control her pathological need for attention, but don't mistake that for influence. Believe me, most young Republicans roll their eyes at her and wish she'd go away. She's an embarrassment to the Republican party, not an asset.

  • felixthecat2

but where were her convictions when her father was running or when Palin made those homophobic remarks even on a federal ban against gay marriages?. I agree on the equality message but I have an issue with the bimbo messenger.

  • ANGRYGOD11

Her father got the national nomination, not her.

She was in no position to contradict him publicly, unless she was a Democrat.

  • Politburo

That doesn't make sense. Under your logic, Colin Powell could not have publicly endorsed Obama.

  • EastRiver

Powell isn't McCain's daughter. Of course she wasn't going to contradict him during the campaign. That in itself would have become the story for weeks. Powell was free to say whatever he wanted. Use your brain.

  • felixthecat2

I just saying that if her convictions were as true as her open letters and interviews on Colbert and other shows then she should have spoken against her father, against her party when Sarah Palin was making those homophobic hateful remarks. I think privileged bimbo is an opportunist.

  • EastRiver

Politics is not that simple. Look at some of the differences between Candidate Obama and President Obama.

  • hotstepper

was this the first election that you've followed? last time i checked this was step 1 in "Getting Elected for Dummies."

  • EastRiver

last time i checked this was step 1 in "Getting Elected for Dummies."

What was step one? Not sure what you are referencing.

  • felixthecat2

100% agree on that, That is not the CHANGE that I voted for.

  • Politburo

The OP's said: "She was in no position to contradict him publicly, unless she was a Democrat."

I didn't say it would have been a wise move for her to contradict her father during the campaign. Of course it wouldn't be.

However, if she wanted to contradict him, she could have done so without being a Democrat.

  • EastRiver

Didn't she work on his campaign? She wasn't going to contradict her father/boss during the campaign. She "could" have but the probability was nil.

  • ANGRYGOD11

Colin Powell is is a respected national figure with a long record of national service. What he says matters.

Meghan McCain is just John McCain's daughter. She knows him better than we do. John McCain doesn't believe most of the right-wing crap he campaigned for. He's never been part of evangelicalism and his campaign manager is openly gay. They agree on most matters, but she can appeal to young voters and speak her mind like he couldn't in 2008.

Now Rudy Giuliani's kids, that's a very different story.

  • longacre

Why is she talking at all?
