Parents Protest Schools Staying Open During Time Of Swine Flu

2009_05_swineprot.jpg This morning, parents, worried about the swine flu and their children's health, held a rally demanding that their Queens public schools be shut down. Currently, there are 21 public schools and five private schools closed due to swine flu concerns. The city maintains that they are monitoring schools, but one parent told NY1 that illness could have been avoid, "My daughter came to school on Monday, she came to school very healthy and when she went home, she was crying for her throat and her head. And then an hour later, she had a high fever."

NY State Health Commissioner Richard Daines announced that there are 299 swine flu cases in the entire state—201 are in NYC. A woman in Sullivan County apparently contracted the swine flu after attending the Mets game at Citi Field on Mother's Day. The Sullivan County manager explained that the trip to Queens was eyed "Because the woman's trip to the game was her only known foray out of Sullivan County lately. Obviously, we don't know for a fact, but it's the first case we have in Sullivan County and we talked to her and the only travel she made was to New York City for the Mets game."

Back to Queens: NY1 says that J.H.S. 189 had 241 of its 700+ students were absent, and 30 of its 50 teachers called in sick. That meant City Councilman John Liu ended up teaching math to the junior high kids today.

"My daughter came to school on Monday, she came to school very healthy and when she went home, she was crying for her throat and her head. And then an hour later, she had a high fever."

ARE YOU KIDDING??? SO THE SUPR FLU MADE THIS PERFECTLY HEALTHY CHILD SICK IN A SHORT SCHOOL DAY...WOW WE SHOULD BE WORRIED. GET REAL.

MAYBE WE SHOULD SHUT DOWN ALL SCHOOLS...WORKPLACES...EVENTS...TRANSPORTATION...LOCK OURSLEVES IN OUR HOMES AND DUCT TAPE ALL THE DOORS, WINDOWS AND AIR DUCTS...GET REAL PEOPLE.

THE CHANCES OF YOU CATCHING IT ARE SLIM...SLIM SLIM...

JUST OVER 200 PEOPLE INFECTED OUT OF 8,000,000+ PEOPLE...

But if it was your child then you would it matter to you more? They are concern for their children and I don't blame them for questioning the govt, the same govt that told us the air after 9-11 was safe and now many first responders and residents are suffering greatly because of govt LIES.

There are over 200 infected people who have "confirmed" swine flu. The doctors are not bothering to confirm most cases of swine flu because the treatment is the same as for regular flu. (see, e.g. NY Times article http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/07/when-swine-flu-hits-home/?scp=1&sq=H1N1%20%20%22first%20hand%22&st=cse)

Confirming each case is burdensome and time consuming -- and the city is not encouraging it. (See the CDC site showing twice as many H1N1 cases in Wisconsin, where the govt is encouraging doctors to confirm and report.) The city schools are keeping track of suspected cases within the system, and they are in the thousands. That's just children in public schools and their families.

The epidemiologists suspect that there are tens of thousands of cases in the city that are simply going unreported, and that there have already been hundreds of thousands in Mexico. I would say that Bloomberg's tactics to keep everyone relaxed are working, and that's good. But the numbers out there are incorrect, and that's really not fair to parents or people who have challenged immune systems.

Bloomberg does like to play with numbers, he does it with crime stats, with the waterfalls debacle, with school scores, etc. Bloomberg is really a quintessential dictator.

I agree. This is ridiculous. Reminds me of the Carlin's "Fear of Germs" bit.

I understand concerns, but this is too damn much. I think that if there are no confirmed cases there is no need to play into all of this hype and close the school.

Think about the fact that a lot of parents work full time jobs. If their child's school get unnecessarily closed they have to be concerned about childcare during that time - either paying for it or taking time from their jobs to be home themselves.

John Liu is a media whore, this man's father was convicted of Bank fraud. Liu received over 30,000 dollars from the towing company to increase their tow rates. Liu gave the working family 10,000 dollars for their endorsement. Liu supports the beating of the residents in Flushing. Liu is a liar and sneaky. Look at his records, most of his community can't stand Liu and now Liu is running for Comptroller. If he is elected then I hope he has no access to the withdrawal box.

I am surprise you didn't mentioned Liu ate a whole bucket of KFC one time back in 1996. Stick with the topic of the post, okay!?

oh, my stalker again, the article mention John liu, duh.

It also mentions the Mets, why don't you comment on how bad their pitching is. And I only respond to your moronic comments. You have PLENTY of other stalkers.

By the way, I am having sea kitten for dinner tonight again.

Man up, you sound like a whining little kid. 69? you probably 69 yourself.

If you talk whining, please reference your original comment as an example.

Man, you are as bad as that original felixthecat animal crusader/loser, What ever happened to him?

seriously get a handle on it. You posted so much over my comment which you deemed irrelevant, just ignore it. You personal attack and obsession with me is quick pathetic. Get over it man, if you really want to fight then meet me anytime. this interchange is for pussies now.

Then I guess per your logic who has commented the most must be the biggest pussy.

BTW, no one is obsess with you, you get the most responses is because your comments are the most inane. I suspect you might be employed by Gothamist to drum up traffic.

You're a pussy because if you deemed the comment irrelevant then ignore it. Then your comments about sea kittens and cartoons only confirm your pussy factor and your obsession with me. Geez, get over me and live. I actually feel sorry for you. And you remarks are kind of silly, I am employed by a private equity firm, duh.

man, I love it when you two go at it. Are you friends in real life and you do this for fun?

I wish I had as much women following me as I have commenters following me on Gothamist, LOL

I was referring to dude69 who follows me and probably dream about 69 with me but it will NEVER happen.

I wonder how many times Felix says "I work at a private equity firm" everyday. I bet the over/under would be 32 times.

actually this was the first time. duh.

I'm over 90% sure that you are valeriob, how pathetic to create another username, LOL

How old are you? You work in an equity firm, yet you talk like a 12 year old boy- calling people pussies, saying "duh" in every other comment, and this gem: "I was referring to dude69 who follows me and probably dream about 69 with me but it will NEVER happen." Grow up and stop being so immature and maybe then people will stop attacking you.

So, how long have you been a file clerk at that private equity firm?

John Liu also picked his nose - and didn't wash his hands afterwards!

And he stole 3 packs of sugar from the Starbucks on Broadway and Church St!

And his sister's husband's cousin's brother-in-law peed in the bushes in a state park once!

Oh yes, John Liu is a master criminal and he Must Be Stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mathematically retarded mob on the move.

Perhaps we should also close Shitty Field by that logic. These parents are at risk themselves just by going out in public, I suggest they stay home and stop whining.

Seriously, it's just another case of the flu, albeit in the off season and affecting healthy people, but it's not killing anymore people than during the winter season, thus it shouldn't be treated as a much greater threat, thus these parents read the NYPost one too many times and have gotten hysterical about nothing.

I hope I get Swine Flu to get me off this fucking earth

If the city keeps ignoring the issue then it will be a epidemic especially in city jails. The gov't lies to protect it own interests and not the people. I don't blame the parents for their concerns for their children.

With all these students missing school how is this going to affect finals exams in a month or so? The way things are going on they should just cancel school for until the fall. There is only like a month left anyway...Maybe open up the school year in August?

That wont work because the cholera season begins in August and lasts until the first frost.

I am waiting for the West Nile Mosquitoes to arrive..

Ugh, they already have. There was a dead bird lying right by the door of my office building this morning.

No, that just means someone's sending you a message.. ;)

That means you're going to sleep with the birds.

No, it means you shouldn't fly on US Airways.

I'm more concerned with the epidemic of Stupid infecting parents from Park Slope to the Bronx.
