Man Survives Vicious Stabbing in Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village residents are calling for increased police presence after a Sunday morning stabbing left their sidewalks stained with blood for the second time in three days. But unlike the unprovoked Thursday morning beating that hospitalized Buffalo resident Allen Williams, this second attack does not appear to be gay-bashing. Police sources tell the Post that the victim, 41-year-old Derek Brown, has a record of 23 arrests. It's believed he was stabbed in the back and arm during a heated argument with an unidentified man at West Fourth and Grove streets about 5:45 a.m. The fight occurred remarkably close to Thursday morning's near-fatal assault, which police are investigating as a hate crime. When cops found Brown collapsed a half a block away, he refused to identify his assailant or answer questions; he's currently in stable condition at St. Vincent's. A reader tells us that on Sunday morning there were "TONS of blood in front of Gristedes on West 4th Street," and another resident tells the Post, "There are shady guys out at night dealing drugs and having heated arguments even outside my window. I'm honestly considering moving. This is the worst it's been in years."

the Christopher street Guardian Angels needed to step up their game.

Sounds like some gang is trying to make a presence in the West Village.

There is a *very* interesting mix of characters in this neighborhood - from college kids, to yuppies, to young black and Hispanic kids, to gay men and woman, to transvestites, to homeless, to a sect of the gay community I can only refer to as gangsta gay (?) - which make this neighborhood so awesome and alive. At the same time, you put that many different types of people together and you're going to have some problems.

This stabbing happened outside my building (I was woken up at around 7AM by Detectives asking if I heard anything...I did not) I love my hood so it's not like I'm gonna race out, but I am always surprised that the NYPD haven't assigned uniformed officers (and police cars) on this block in a more visible fashion, especially on the weekends when it's total bedlam on the streets. I don't think it needs to look like club row in the 20's where you can't drive and it's cops everywhere, but I do agree that there is not enough of a "posted presence" by the police in this high trafficked neighborhood.

p.s blood was *everywhere* on the sidewalk and street...it's amazing this guy is still alive.

The rush to condemn the victim is disgusting. This victim was stabbed in the back repeatedly-yet somehow his arrest record and failure to recall the identity of his attacker is deemed relevant. Is there any DESCRIPTION OF THE PERP?

It's no big secret that the guys on the third floor above Julius on Waverly are selling H and other things. I almost want to open a lemonade stand to sell drinks to all the junkies waiting around the corner.

You'd do better with ice cream. Just sayin'.

If that guy wants to give up his apartment at a discount, I'll take it. We can swap, he can come out to Brooklyn, where people never get stabbed.

ooooh, the old "My Borough is Stabbier than Your Borough" pissing contest...

The 6th precinct is the weakest link in the chain. There is NEVER any police foot patrol.
