Catholics Don't Object to Bloomberg Commencement 'Choice'

2009_05_bloombergbaby.jpg While President Obama drew a lot of flak from the Catholics angry about him giving the commencement speech at Notre Dame yesterday, pro-choicer Mayor Bloomberg seemed to fly under the church's radar for being honored (and giving "humorous" remarks) at local Catholic university Fordham on Saturday. A spokesman for Archbishop Dolan said that he was "unaware that the mayor was at Fordham," but stopped short of offering any take on the school's choice. Dolan has been very open about his objections to Obama speaking at Notre Dame, saying this weekend it could be seen as an endorsement of the president's pro-choice stance. Good thing he cleared that up since there's been so much speculation on just where the Catholic Church stands on the issue. The Post talked to one New Yorker who sat out her Notre Dame graduation yesterday (opting to spend the time praying instead). She told the paper, "I wouldn't be able to approve them handing him a degree. Your commencement speaker is supposed to be someone you emulate, and they're supposed to be sending you off into the world."

Agreed. And not just because its my alma mater.

I am a non-practicing Catholic who figured out their shtick a long time ago. As vividly demonstrated at Notre Dame, they don't care about anybody's opinion but their own. My question is why should we care about theirs? This post was a waste of electrons that compelled me to waste more.

Seriously: "Your commencement speaker is supposed to be someone you emulate, and they're supposed to be sending you off into the world."

Or, as you put it, "I disagree with him in one point, so the PRESIDENT of the country is no longer worth emulating."

People are morons.

it's kind of apples and oranges. notre dame is a bigger symbol of catholicism than fordham by leaps and bounds. obama has also been the one of the biggest pro-choice supporters in the country; safe to say the biggest really since he is now president and has received many "100%" votes from organizations like naral, planned parenthood, etc. abortion is legal in the united states. from the perspective of a pro-lifer you can't protest every pro-choice thing, but this is a logical place to draw a line.
