Bloomberg's War Chest is Seriously Boobing Out

There was some talk about a year ago that upon finishing out his second and final term, Mayor Bloomberg's plans were to ride off into the sunset and begin pouring some of the many millions he had accumulated into the philanthropic causes supported by his foundation. In the time since, Bloomberg has in fact found a way to open the vault on his fortune at a record pace—into winning an election that no one seems to believe will even be close. With a financial report filed this weekend, Bloomberg has already spent $18.7 million on his campaign for a third term, twice what he had spent at this point in 2005. It's also nearly ten times what challenger Bill Thompson has spent and triple what any possible contender can can spend until September under campaign finance regulations. A public affairs expert tells the Times, “There appears to be very little downside to this kind of spending...It’s a shock-and-awe approach. The paper also calls the mayor's treatment suspiciously harsh treatment of Anthony Weiner (who's not even in the race!) "a thuggish cast to Mr. Bloomberg’s Park Avenue-style campaign."

"and begin pouring some of the many millions he had accumulated into the philanthropic causes supported by his foundation." Millions? A million bucks to him is like me flipping a quarter to the guy who holds open the door at my local deli.

Where and what has this man done with his billions? I don't see any new museums or parks or stadiums or whatever being funded by this guy. What does he do at night? Count his winnings in tens and twenty's?

He's no Astor, Vanderbilt, Whitney, Rockefeller or any of the other thieving shits that lived before him in NYC. Get it together Bloomberg and do something with your billions. The city might even rename a bridge after you. Or a large hole downtown that use be named the World Trade Center.

Bloomberg has given hundreds of millions to Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater (Bloomberg School of Public Health). He's given many millions to many charity groups in New York.

I'm not a fan of his strong-arming his way into a third term, but he has been relatively generous with his cash.

Isn't John Hopkins in Baltimore? What the shit do we New Yorkers care about hospitals in Baltimore when here in New York City the hospitals go for wanting?

I hear a hospital out in Allentown, Pennsylvania could use a few million.

With all his money he hasn't founded anything like Sloan-Kettering.

He should shit or eat more prunes, because he ain't getting any younger.

He's not just spending to win. He's spending to redeem his reputation in the public's eyes as a civic hero and virtuous public figure. But--sorry, Mike--there's not enough money in the world to get that rep back.

What has this man done in the last eight years that makes him a hero? He's virtuous in what way? He doesn't take a salary?

If he flipped a billion a year to NYC. He would still have seventeen more years before he ran out of money. Now that is what I would call a very impressive mayor.

He's no Brooke Astor, or a Lennox, or a Morgan, or a Trump (oops sorry about that), or a Woodie Allen (oops sorry about that one too, wrong story.
