Video: Colbert Savors Obscenely Priced Food, Bashes Soda Tax

Remember that $25,000 sundae that Serendipity 3 was selling back before the stock market parked itself in the garage with the engine running? Needless to say, they haven't been selling too many of those lately, and even their down-market $1,000 sundae hasn't had any takers since last November.

But here comes Stephen Colbert to the rescue again; last night his food-centric show featured a "Colbert Platinum" segment in which he supported the local restaurant gimmick economy, dining on a $1,000 omelet at Norma's in Le Parker Meridien, and a $1,000 pie from Nino's Bellissima Pizza, then finishing with the aforementioned "Golden Opulence Sundae." While enjoying his dessert, Colbert wondered, "If I gave you another thousand dollars, could I make someone poor watch me eat it?"

The proposed federal soda tax also found itself in Colbert's cross hairs; the host spent much of the show, which included an interview with The Omnivore's Dilemma author Michael Pollan, pounding as much Sierra Mist as possible, "before Johnny Law tries to infringe on my unquenchable right to life, liberty, and high fructose corn syrup... Hey Democrats! You can have my soda when you pry it from my cold, diabetic hands!" Video below, via Eat Me Daily.

Serendipity 3 stopped selling their $25,000 sundae after they were closed for health code violations. I guess inspectors found cockroaches and mouse droppings all over that shitehole.

Were they at least posh cockroaches?

I wrote about the DOH closure when it happened, though it's not clear that they stopped "offering" the 25K sundae. It was just a publicity stunt, though I bet if someone with 25K to spend actually wanted it, they'd whip it together.

Ok unrelated to Colbert, but does anyone remember the incredibly creepy commercial that Nino had running on channels like NY1 about a year ago - it was him doing all the tasks that it takes to run a restaurant, all while weird music played in the background and he stared directly. into. the. camera.

The second he showed up on Colbert I shrieked in horror. If anyone remembers this commercial or can find it, please share.
