The Yankees are almost a quarter of their way through the season and their manager is excited that the man who was supposed to be the biggest bat while A-Rod was on the shelf is now hitting two points over .200. Apparently seeing it as a sign that Mark Teixeira is about to turn things around, Girardi called the first baseman's two-for-four performance the most promising development in the team's 8-2 win over the Blue Jays last night. Only two other regular starters in the AL are hitting lower that Teixeira and the closest recent Yankee slugger with nearly as bad of a start was Tino Martinez hitting .254 at same point one season. GM Brian Cashman is spinning the bad start as the 180 Million Dollar Man dealing with the "pressure" of his big contract and new environment. But Teixeira is taking the high road for his performance, saying, "You can always try to find excuses...Yeah, more people are watching, no doubt. More people are writing about it, no doubt. But those are things I can't control...There are no excuses. If you start making excuses for yourself, you've got something wrong with you."

Actually the guy has a history of slow starts, and his performance hasn't been the Yankees' main problem. They are producing runs at a good pace, but their pitching stinks.
Of all his "slow starts" this is by far his slowest. In his entire career, he never batted less than .260 in the first two months of any season. The "slow start" thing is at this point a rationalization. He is performing well below where he should be.
To elaborate on Yankee pitching: currently 14th in the American League in ERA at 5.64, 3rd in most walks allowed with 133
Slow starts or not, the checks still clear. Maybe he should have signed that fat extension the Rangers offered him in 2007... It's a helluva lot easier to play baseball in a town that has limited expectations.
He already said he didn't want to be THE MAN on a team like the Rangers. As a Yankee he can be a star with other stars and still get the money.
Yeah some star he has been for the Yankees... Back to Arlington with him i say!!!!
Keep him please! The Rangers are doing fine without him.
Keep him please! The Rangers are doing fine without him.
Bring back Clemens !
what you actually mean is bring back steroids and stop PED testing. baseball is tainted.
Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon and Joe Girardi are stinking up the team too. Fire Girardi.
Are you a) not watching the games at all, or are you b) just stupid? Johnny Damon is having the best start to a season of his entire career: .323 BA, 1.022 OPS, 9 HR, 26 RBI. Nick Swisher is doing great in his role as utility guy, his OPS of .956 is more than honorable. Yes some of Giradi's moves have been questionable, but in the end, he is not the one on the mound, his pitchers have just not been performing. (I think the answer to my question is b.)
Heh. Damon is 15th in the AL in batting average, tied for 6th in home runs with 9, 11th in RBIs, etc., etc. He's the team leader in each of those categories, along with others. And he's "stinking up the team." Yes, "blabla" seems to be an appropriate moniker.
I've always been a sucker for a guy who knows the value of OPS.
