New Venue Littlefield Opens in Gowanus

With every venue that shuts down in Manhattan, a new one seems to pop up in Gowanus! We first heard about Littlefield last September, and now the performance and art space is ready to open this Saturday, May 16th!

From the looks of it, Julie Kim and Scott Koshnoodi (the duo behind the venue doors) have created a beautiful DIY space. We're told the 6200-square-foot warehouse space has plenty of eco-friendly elements, including: a landscaped interior courtyard, sound walls formed from recycled rubber tires, a bar constructed of salvaged bowling alley lanes, and energy supplied by wind-power. Future plans include incorporating a grey water system and a landscaped roof. Inside, a movable partition was built to separate the main live space from the bar and courtyard, this can be moved to accommodate larger crowds for performances if need be. All in all there's a 250 capacity, and they plan to host live performances, art installations and film screenings in the space.

If you'd like to check out the space, and see more of Sergio Pizzo Barrele's art, head over to the soft opening this Saturday (2 p.m. to 2 a.m.). The Friction folk will be helping Maria Porcaro with the booking, so look forward to spending some quality time down by the canal (here's a map to help you get there).

meh. another medium sized venue in nyc. do we really need another when we already have bowery ballroom, the bell house, southpaw, music hall of wb, webster hall, studio b, santos party house...?

personally i'd like to see more teeny-tiny independent places (especially those outside of the bowery presents circuit, like cakeshop or DBA) open up than these 300+ capacity spots.

"All in all there's a 250 capacity, and they plan to host live performances, art installations and film screenings in the space"

300+?

according to this earlier gothamist article (http://gothamist.com/2008/09/02/new_venue_alert_littlefield.php), the venue holds closer to 300 when the center partition is removed.

"When the partition is fully closed, the performance space can accommodate up to 200 people while the bar/courtyard can hold up to 100. For larger performances, the partition can be moved to one side and the warehouse can accommodate up to 300 people."

some of the other venues i listed hold over 300. i guess i consider this place in league with them.

Maybe? What I like about the view in these pictures here is that the whole place seems much more spacious, open, and airy (well, except for that last image) than most of those other medium-sized venues. It's also coming into an area with few other nearby venues besides Bell House and Southpaw.

Teeny-tiny spaces are excellent, but in this city it's probably harder to get one up and running on such small crowds. I'm not too familiar with Gowanus, but nearby in Park Slope there are a few such places: Perch, Roots Cafe, Bar 4...
