NY State Extends Unemployment Benefits

2009_05_jobfair.jpg With the state jobless rate at, by the latest numbers, 7.8% (in NYC, the rate is 8.1%) and prospects of an economic recovery slow at best, the NY Times reports, "Lawmakers in Albany agreed on Tuesday to change the state’s unemployment insurance system in order to prevent more than 100,000 New Yorkers from running out of jobless benefits starting later this month." The State Legislature must vote on the changes which "are intended to make New York eligible to collect $645 million in federal stimulus money for its unemployment insurance system. Most of that money — $370 million — would extend benefits to people who have been collecting unemployment pay for more than a year. The rest would go toward closing a gap in the state’s insolvent unemployment fund." Apparently Albany has given up on trying to revamp the entire system (which gives a max of $430/week in benefits, $150 less than states like NJ and Connecticut) in order to at least get the benefits extension done.

If you've been on unemployment for more than a year it's no longer unemployment, that's welfare.

It's one thing to be out of work for a few months in tough times, it's another thing to not find a job, any job, in over a year.

That's milking the system.

I'm guessing you've never been unemployed in New York City during a recession. I have (both now and back in 2001) and trust me, it's very tough to find a job. This one feels worse than the one in 2001. It took me 10 months to find a job in 2001 and I have no idea when I'll find another one this time.

To "OTC" and those that would consider Unemployment Insurance the same as Welfare: Three of the differences my friends are as follows:(1)The word after Unemployment is INSURANCE, which MOST people get when they lose a job through no fault of their own (lay-off, job elimination, company sold, company bankruptcy, etc...),(2)In order to qualify, one would have had to have worked and paid taxes, and (3)Unemployment Benefits are fucking taxed, unlike Welfare! That means if a person doesn't find a job, they might very well owe the IRS and State and be in debt until they can work and pay the taxes back! Sure, there are people who abuse the system, and despite some folks who are working and thinking it might be a great vacation, MOST people who lose middle to high level positions cannot survive for a long period of time on Unemployment Benefits. Not everybody is looking for a hand-out, though it appears to many that it's ok to bail out certain industries that end up milking tax paying citizens, like Joe the Fucking Fake Plumber! Also, most people actually do look for work, but this is an extra difficult period to find a job in NYC, unless you are of the belief that McDonalds is actually going to hire somebody who was previously making $60k-six figure incomes, or even $30-$50k! There are too many students, younger people starting out, and those with little professional experience that tend to be hired for the jobs that some consider "any job." To those who think being unemployed in NYC for a long period of time, even while receiving benefits is milking the system, I hope you lose your job during this current recession and experience how "EASY" it is to get a job, you scumbag(s)! It's easy to talk when you have a job, but when you find YOURSELF in the same boat as hundreds of thousands of people around the country, then maybe you'll think you deserve this INSURANCE as well, asshole! Okay OTC (Over The Counter). "Do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!"

I thought people who receive unemployment have to prove that they're looking for a job? Well, probably not. A friend of mine started receiving unemployment benefits more than a year ago, and has made no effort finding a job. She then had a baby 11 months ago, and has no intention to look for a job in the near future, but will continue to collect money.
I feel this is abuse of the system, but perhaps I'm just jealous, since I've been freelancing for 10 years, will have no work soon, and am entitled to zero unemployment benefits.

unless of course you incorporated yourself, then you are entitled.

you are just jealous...im really jealous of all my unemployed friends taking vacations to Europe and south america on their benefits while im stuck here at work.

between collecting unemployment and worrying about how to pay my rent, I'll pick employment.
because finding a Job is a Job, and if you're not Looking, You're not Looking because there's jobs out there.
sure there are, all these phoney job centers/outplacement firms and their stupid resume workshops and stupid interview crap.

Of course they won't raise benefits, don't you know that anyone who makes more than other people is rich and therefore worthy of scorn and disgust?

ive been out of work for about 6 months and collecting unemployment for 5 of those months. The first month or so was cool because I focused on some hobbies and read books. Now it sucks and I want a job. However I would rather not have a shitty part time job that pays 10 bucks an hour but that is going to happen soon if I want money.

good thing my rent is low

jules1000: Although your friend has not looked for a job and doesn't plan on looking, in order to receive the new Federal Extension, a requirement is that a list must be submitted in order to continue receiving benefits. The reason why lists were not enforced for the regular UI benefits is because this is the worst recession in modern history, and if you did not have free-lance work, you would know, or you will find out how hard it is right now to get a job. To anybody that thinks being out of a good-paying job for over a year is a vacation, you are out of touch, and jealous for no good reason. I'm jealous of people who have jobs that they can freelance at - It is nice to not go to a job that I hate everyday, but it is not so nice that I can barely afford bills and definitely cannot to afford anything extra on unemployment benefits. You only will learn when it happens to you!
