Craigslist Turning Erotic Services Into "Adult Services"

2009_04_brismanhl.jpg After standing by their "erotic services" section in the weeks following the "Craigslist Murder" of Julissa Brisman (pictured), the site has finally caved to pressure and announced that it will shut down the section that is home to many ads for illegal prostitution. Last week the heat on craigslist was turned up when three state's attorney generals (including Connecticut's) asked them to eliminate the section that also made headlines recently for connecting George Weber to alleged teenage murder John Katehis. The site will start a new section for "adult services" at double the advertising fee ($10 now) where each ad will be reviewed by a craigslist employee. In a craigslist blog obtained by the LA Times, a rep for the site wrote, "Unsurprisingly, but completely contrary to some of the sensationalistic journalism we've seen these past few weeks, the record is clear that use of craigslist classifieds is associated with far lower rates of violent crime than print classifieds." Erotic services will close down when the current ads expire in seven days, making a soapy body slide with a local blond one of New York's last offerings.

I see no problems with making an adult Section" and having someone make sure no one is doing anything illegal. But, like I said, if you don't like it, then instead of getting made at the people trying to uphold the law, change it.

  • schizofriendly

    Decriminalize, regulate, and tax prostitution.

Right, like hookers won't simply place listings in other sections of Craigslist. This won't make a difference.

  • made = mad.

  • If you guys don't like it, then work with your representatives to change the law that states prostitution is illegal.

This is what CNN reported Blumenthal having said:

"I was informed by Craigslist late last night that it will eliminate the 'erotic services' section within seven days, create a new section called 'adult services,' and manually review every ad posted there to bar flagrant prostitution and pornography."

Prostitution is illegal. I am making no judgement call about whether that's right or wrong, but if CL was helping in breaking the law, they must stop doing so.

oh yeah just change the laws...cause we live in a democratic city where thats possible, right? Is that really how it works? I wonder who voted for alternate side parking four days a week for my block?

please, you can for hookers or against them, but lets suggest the masses make laws, they don't, certainly not nowadays, and perhaps ever.

  • You've made your point, you don't think there's a way to change the law. But my original point still stands. CL was breaking the law.

But F*ck it. Let's all just live in an anarchical state.
