What have you done for your intimate New York living space lately? 32-year-old Kevin Patterson just took home Apartment Therapy's first place prize for the smallest, coolest apartment ("teeny tiny" division). His 210-square-foot space on the upper West Side costs him $1,550/month in rent, according to the Daily News. He told the paper, "I moved here from a place that was four or five times this big."
In order to keep from feeling claustrophobic, he kept mostly everything white, and says "Things are hidden everywhere." He gave some tips to Apartment Therapy on how to make the most of a small space, saying everything "has to do double duty. Even the big mirror has adhesive hooks on the back for holding my mop and broom." Who hasn't kept some tchotchkes in the oven?

$1,550/month for 210 square feet on West End Ave.?
Why were these apts built so small, anyway? People used to be smaller before McDonalds, but not by that much.

$1200, 1 bed, 600 sq ft plus 250 sq ft yard, Astoria. Woo!
should be a reply to #15... dunno what happened there
He's paying wayyyyy too much for that shoebox masquerading as an apartment . He should renegotiate his rent.
Around what for his place would people say is a fair rental price?
Realistically, $1k but I certainly wouldn't pay more than $850 for that coffin. You would find better accommodation inside of a submarine.
alot of people are content to live like that. they feel their address is the most important thing in life, even if it means developing mental problems.
I just find it difficult to understand why someone would spend 1500+ for a space that small when they could be in brooklyn or queens for cheaper and bigger (West End Ave? Really?) The kitchen in the bed space thing grosses me out, but he did a good job with what he has. It looks nice, until you realize the kitchen is 1 foot from your bed.
Look again. The bathroom is right in front of the bed, not the kitchen.
As far as fair market price, I'd say $1,150 for that location in this market.
You could find a studio 2x larger in the city for that price nowadays.
but if he's happy then...
Does his apartmant have a nifty place to string a rope for hanging oneself?
when I moved out of my 1BR on the Lower East Side last August, I was paying $1500 (when I moved in, it was $1200).
$1550 for this space is ABSURD.
The lesson here is that you don't need thousands of square feet to be comfortable. For our brethren in suburban McMansions, pay attention, ye wasters of resources.
Agreed. I like smaller apartments much more than large McMansions. More space for me just means more shit to manage.
A lot of the McMansion owners cannot even afford furniture for all of their (unused) rooms.

Nothing says winner like paying $1550 a month for a broom closet.
The lesson here is that guy is a douche. Paying that much for 200 sq ft anywhere in the city is insaneo in the brain. o.
oh wait can this turn into a thread where everybody posts their rent, neighborhood and square footage? omgee i love those! come on you know you want to talk about yourself. ok fine i'll go first. $2100 UWS 700ish.
Bronx Zoo. And having no concept of monetary exchange, I'm exempt from paying rent. FUCK YEAH
Good idea. $1450 Fort Greene. 435sq ft.
sucker, you can get a 500-600 sq foot studio in the west village for 1300
False.
$1950, 1 bed, 50's 11th ave, new building, 650 sq ft
$2200 (includes cable/internet), 725 sq ft, cobble hill, brooklyn
Cute for a weekend, but I'd be stir-crazy in a week.
Unsurprising that so many Gothamist commenters seem to live alone.
