Thief Nabbed After Targeting Soho Apple Store Customers

2009_04_apstoret.jpg Apple items are really hot: Police arrested a man who "would allegedly stalk his victims as they left the [Apple] store on Prince Street, assault and rob them, and then pawn the stolen merchandise," according to the Post. In one instance, Dwyane Stewart came up behind a business executive, pushed a "hard object" into his back and threatened, "Don't do nothing stupid," before taking his computer. Stewart robbed three people, pawning the items at an electronics store: "He was nabbed after a person who had unwittingly bought one of the hot computers took it in for service at an Apple Store. A worker there looked up its registration number and discovered it had been reported stolen." The computer was traced back to the store and then to Stewart. Stewart admitted to the robberies and is being held on $50,000 bail.

    igotrobbed.

The store that bought the piece from the robber should be nailed. These stores are licensed by The NYC Consumer Affairs Dept. It's a sure thing the guy knew he was buying hot stuff and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. The term "pawned" is incorrect, it would mean that he took a loan out and used the Apple unit as collateral until he paid it back. The corrected term would be "fenced".

    Umm, douche.

  • JacqueMehoff

it was only a matter of time,

why wait at a subway platform when you can go straight to the source. I see people dangling their apple bags while talking on their cell phone quite often. even tourists.

I'm sure Mommy and Daddy are getting the bail money together. Make that Mommy - there's no Daddy.

  • Rocknrope

What electronics store would accept pawned merch from a guy off the street? I wonder if the store is going to be nailed for receiving stolen goods.

  • Snoopy

Any description of this Dwayne Stewart guy so I know who to look out for when I am buying Apple products?

  • tsol

His name is Dwayne- you need a description?

  • Anonymous Lost Cause

There is no description in the Post article and they sure aren't what paranoid racists like to call "the thought police." But why would a description matter so much -- if some dude who did not match the description asked you to hand over your Apple store purchase would you do it? Or would you merely feel more comfortable being a little careless in dangling it off your wrist while yakking on the phone? If you need to have descriptions of known criminals before you start being careful you have bigger problems than not having a description of this guy.

what exactly is your aversion to perp descriptions? how is it racist to state the facts of an incident?

  • Guest

ALC, just like every other knee-jerk, punk-ass liberal is afraid that the perp might hear that the media described them as black, when in fact, they are brown. This may lead the perp to kill everyone they see that's white, so ALC would then have to let out his racist tendencies and cross the street every time he saw a brown or black person coming his way.

  • dr zippy

This is just another in a long line of race-baiting comments by Snoopy. He has made this same comment in many posts about crimes where the perp is not described.

  • whitecastlerock

Wow-where is you sense of community? If you happened upon this store and noted someone who matched a description would you just tuck your tail between your legs and walk away? A description of a thief is necessary to warn potential victims...

  • Spirit of 76

It's not paranoia. It just makes him feel better to read "it was a black guy."

At least this thief had taste. If you're going to steal, go for the good stuff.

  • hotstepper

unfortunately, perp descriptions have been outlawed by the thought police.
