Broadway Addams Family Will Star Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth

051209addams1.jpg Producers of a forthcoming Broadway version of The Addams Family have confirmed that Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth have signed on to star in the new musical. According to the Post, Lane will play family patriarch Gomez, and Neuwirth will co-star as his wife, Morticia. The production, expected to premiere next March (rights were granted two years ago), will mainly riff on the aesthetic of Charles Addams' old New Yorker cartoons—not the classic TV series they spawned. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) have written the book, and Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party) has penned the music and lyrics. The Times reports that "the plot will revolve around the couple’s daughter Wednesday, now 18, and her family’s adjustment to her coming of age, her new boyfriend and his parents." Krysta Rodriguez, the cute In the Heights vet, will play Wednesday, and Terrence Mann (Les Misérables) and Carolee Carmello (Parade) will play her boyfriend's parents.

It will be a serious disappointment if the Addams Family Groove is not in the show. Also, I think MC Hammer wouldn't mind the royalties.

i would definitely pay money to go see the show if that were in it!

My question is whether or not anybody could possibly upstage Christina Ricci's priceless portrayal of Wednesday in the big screen version.

I'm waiting for "Porky's" the musical.

nathan lane? worst casting ever.

On the other hand, Bebe Neuwirth is such an obvious Morticia Addams that it's tough to even give them much credit for casting her.

When will Broadway come up with something original again?

Broadway is not the place to go for real creative breakthroughs, because of the economics and the audience demographic. Theater tends to get proportionately more exciting the further one gets from Broadway. At the same time, there continues to be quite a good number of original shows on Broadway. This season alone features worthwhile productions like reasons to be pretty and God of Carnage, and last year's Passing Strange was phenomenal. Of course, not one of those shows premiered on Broadway. Still, I think this Addams Family business could be tolerable.

Quick, somebody whip up a Munsters musical!

While we're on classic television - where's my song and dance adaptation of Hogan's Heroes?

Isn't EVERYONE tired of Nathan Lane yet?
