At a meeting of the New School’s board of trustees last night, Bob Kerrey announced that he will step down as university president when his contract expires in July 2011. He did not explain the reasons for his decision, but insisted that it had nothing to do with faculty opposition and passionate student protests demanding his resignation. In breaking the news, City Room accurately describes Kerrey as "a decorated war hero," but omits the small matter of his slaughter of more than a dozen Vietnamese women and children in Thanh Phong village in 1969. The massacre is not irrelevant; New School students calling for Kerrey's dismissal say his involvement in the CIA's Operation Phoenix make him unfit to govern a progressive university that was founded by WWII refugees. In other New School news, trustees and faculty members have ordered an inquiry into the events surrounding last month's short-lived student occupation of a New School building, which resulted in 22 arrests. (On GOOD FRIDAY!)

The New School is a joke
I bet Kerrey holds his pencil....ah forget it.
Hi,
Thanks for the link to the City Room blog. We have updated our post with more background; getting the news of his departure up first was our priority.
The updates include information about his Vietnam record. Indeed, you omit that it was an investigation by The New York TImes and CBS News that broke the news in 2001:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/25/magazine/25KERREY.html
The gist: As a young lieutenant, Mr. Kerrey led a combat mission in 1969 that caused the deaths of 13 to 20 unarmed Vietnamese civilians. He has denied that his unit knowingly killed women and children.
Oh for fuck's sake, shut it
Just leave now. Sticking around will just mean the next two years will be miserable for everybody at the school, including him.
Sic semper tyrannis.
Kudos to the protesters who pushed this bully boy out.
Notice how all those who attacked the protesters have little to say now.
I don't know if he was pushed out, especially because he said he's seen/had worse shit done to him. He called the protesters tactless and he's right. You know why? Because they could have done so much, but they all got arrested and then whined about police brutality when NO ONE got beaten. Being pushed to the ground is not the same thing as being beaten. And as for the kid who said he didn't get treatment while he was in jail? It's because he refused it so he could make idiots like you feel bad for him and cry police brutality. It's the second most used term next to "sexual predator," a word America LOVES.
Reiterating everyone else's points about the protesters: they're just a bunch of privileged hipsters with nothing to do. That's right. Even the token black kid with the megaphone in the last post about protests who claims he's lived his life in oppression. I mean Anarchy, are you serious? They have no idea what they're dealing with. It looks so good on paper to them, but like Communism, it just won't work. Let bygones be arrested...
