Brooklyn Speaks Out Against Fireworks Move

0509FIREWORKS.jpg As if Macy's could move the 4th of July fireworks from the East to the Hudson River and not hear about it from Brooklyn. Council Member David Yassky issued the following statement yesterday regarding the huge dis to the borough: “The annual Fourth of July fireworks show on the East River and over the internationally-recognized Brooklyn Bridge is one of our City’s greatest spectacles. Moving the show to New Jersey would negatively impact thousands of tourists and residents who come to Manhattan and Brooklyn to enjoy the show, and the countless local business that stand to benefit from the event. I urge Macy’s to split the show so that Brooklyn residents are not robbed of this important tradition and influx of economic activity during this moment of economic uncertainty.” The Brooklyn Paper seconds that emotion today with a number of quotes from disappointed residents, including Marty Markowitz himself, who reminds the retailer that the borough is also linked to Henry Hudson's journeys. The paper notes that "the change will hinder views from the Columbia Street Waterfront District all the way to Greenpoint — and inland to Fort Greene, Park Slope and beyond."

Brooklyn should secede.

Brooklyn whiner crybabies. Macy's can put the fireworks wherever they want, it's there show. Brooklyn is free to stage it's own show.

Get over it, Yassky. It's a pain in the ass for people who live on the west side to get to the east side to see the fireworks. You've been spoiled all your life -- now it's our turn to enjoy what we've been unable to appreciate from our own backyards.

They used to be on the west side through the 70's. There's a lot more parkland on both sides of the Hudson that there is along the east river. Get over it Brooklyn.

It's just a fireworks show. Who cares?

The West Side doesn't deserve anything.

I can't believe that some of you would rather have MORE not LESS people cramming Manhattan on a hot, summer holiday. A pain in the ass getting to the east side from the west side? Are you kidding me? Try dealing with the MTA to get from Brooklyn to the west side. Isn't it bad enough you have us Brooklynites invading Manhattan during a work day? Wouldn't you want us kept "on the other side of the river?"
Let's kick Macy's out of Downtown Brooklyn and open a WalMart just for spite. I think Brooklyn should secede so we can succeed! We'd be a bigger city than what's left of NYC anyway and get more state funding. Then we'll throw our own Independence Day celebration and really be thankful.
Yeah baby!!! Youse gots a problem wit dat???

I have mixed feelings about this. I've never gone out to the east side to watch the fireworks, in part because I wasn't really sure where to go that it wouldn't be a madhouse. But between the west side highway and the parkland along the river, maybe there's more space over on the west side.

But...if it just means transferring a complete clusterf**k from the east side of the island to the west side, then no thanks.

The Macy's show is for the benefit of all NY'ers, and personally I feel this is a very poor choice. Most if not all cities/boroughs/what have you, pay for their own shows so while it's a win for taxpayers, in cases like these the corporate marketing screwballs force us in Brooklyn (and even Queens) to sit on our roofs sans display - achtung! But thankfully you west siders don't have to walk ALL THE WAY to the east side - quite an absurd statement - no offence, it did give me - and it appears stenro- a chuckle

Right? In their eagerness to celebrate Hudson's arrival in the location that would eventually become New York, the only part of New York that benefits from this move is the west side of Manhattan. The East River is more centrally located for everyone (well, New Yorkers that is).

If I'm correct, taxpayers foot the bill for extra NYPD overtime during the celebration, yes? Not only are we paying for what we don't get to enjoy, but I bet they will have to dispatch more officers to patrol the inevitable increase in illegal fireworks this year.

Just shove a ton of gunpowder up Marty's ass, strap him to a rocket and Boom! Brooklyn fireworks display to rival anything from Sydney to London.

If only there was a way for those self-entitled Brooklynites to get all the way over to the other side of the island.......if only someone had invented transportation.

The point is: half the audience will be Jerseyites, who deserve nothing from NYC.

Dumb move, Macy's

It's a pain in the ass to get from the west side to the east side? And you call Brooklynites whiners?

No biggie. It's only for one year. I got friends in Jersey, or maybe a road trip this year.

I'm glad that they're moving it. I live in East Midtown, near the water, but I can't see the show from my tiny apartment building. My neighborhood becomes mobbed for the day and the dust from the show gets on my windows, into my air conditioning units, tracked through my apartment building, etc. I'd happily travel to another part of the city or NJ to watch the show.

OK so how does this make sense? The east river is more or less geographically in the middle of the city. The crowd gets split up - Half in Brooklyn, half in Manhattan. So... Now they're going to put the show on the edge of the city so everybody has to go to one edge? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, and it's on a Saturday night too, so the trains should be running just great - Maybe they'll even run them on a Sunday schedule just to make things better... It is a federal holiday after all. Who said "if only someone had invented transportation" Easy for you to say if you live near the A train. The rest of us suck the proverbial egg. With so many smart people living in this city, it blows my mind how, as a group, we keep doing such stupid shit. Can somebody weigh in on this? cause... I don't get it.

Is there any reason they can't spread them out around Manhattan? They were too close together last year.
