Nic Cage Disney Flick Sustains Another Car Crash, Injuring 8

050609cagecrash.jpg How many people have to be hospitalized before Nic Cage's reign of terror ends? Earlier this morning there was another car crash connected to Times Square set of Sorcerer's Apprentice, where a stunt car chase went dangerously wrong just days ago. This time, however, it was the production team that found themselves in harm's way; filming had just wrapped for the night when a BMW SUV traveling south on 7th Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets crashed into a parked car after swerving to avoid striking a yellow taxi. According to ABC 7, the unoccupied vehicle was then sent hurtling onto the sidewalk, striking as many as eight crew members gathered under the marquee of Mama Mia. Production team member Hameen Rasul tells CBS 2, "The streets shouldn't have been open, we had the streets until 5:30." Eight people were taken to the hospital with "minor injuries" and no charges were filed—though we all know who's really at fault here, and if there's any justice one day he'll have to answer for his crimes. Particularly Bangkok Dangerous. UPDATE: Will it never end? A commenter hips us to a devastating fire at Park Slope's Grace Cleaners while Sorcerer's Apprentice was filming in the neighborhood; although investigators have yet to link Cage to the blaze, one imagines the production's parked trucks may have complicated the firefighters' response.

Worst BMW product placement ever.

If Bloomberg had his way there would be no traffic in Times Square.

Also,

When they were filming a scene at the 7th Ave F station in Brooklyn (which will appear as West 4 in the movie), Grace Dry Cleaners (right above the station) caught fire and burned up completely.

Movie trucks were lining all of 9th st, so I'm assuming the Fire Department had a few issues getting access to the building.

The "making-of-the-movie" sub feature should be more interesting than the actual flick.

The animated version was much safer.

I thought they brought money into the city and help local businesses? not destroy local businesses and maim people.

There will never be a better car chase than the one in Bullitt...

French Connection I (under the elevated subway tracks) had an equally awesome car chase. Good article recently in the Times as director William Friedkin revisited the location of that shoot. This was filmmaking before permits:

"There were no permits and no planning — just sheer nerve. “After 26 blocks, from Bay 50th to Bay 24th Street, I ran out of film, but I knew I had enough,” Mr. Friedkin said."

@whitecastlerock: what about the car chase in The French Connection?

Filming of The Sorcerer's Apprentice in Park Slope caused more than the usual headaches, since they used much of the Seventh Ave. F train station for the better part of two days. Getting in and out of the station required hopping over wires, cables and other large pieces of film equipment. I know the city benefits from filming, but I doubt whether residents of neighborhoods where much filming is done benefit. Film crews are supposed to hire locals, but that really rarely happens.
I say go back to Toronto, Vancouver or the studio lots.

To you and Drewo-yeah I forgot about the French Connection! I guess I preferred the cars in Bullitt. Thanks for reminding me

@famdoc I can't take issue with a large film production causing headaches in neighborhoods, but films shot in New York DO hire from an extensive local crew pool. If studios & producers try to bring in non-local crew members, the unions in the area require that local crew members be hired in those positions as well.

If we're talking car chases, Ronin must of course be mentioned, as well as it's predecessor, Grand Prix (though technically that was racing, not car chases).

I agree.. but of course I am biased. I think the main weak point with Ronin is that they really wanted to have a plot around the chase scenes, instead of just filler a la The Transporter, et al. While the plot and characters are well written, it takes multiple viewings to really understand how all the pieces fit together.

I think you also have to watch the features on the DVD to truly appreciate how good the chase scenes are.

It's a Mamet story, that's why!

Have you seen Frankenheimer's segment in the BMW Films series? That was pretty good too.

Yeah, I remember waiting for the next BMW film to come out when they were doing that (though JF's was the first). Pretty cool ad campaign, though I dunno if it sold any cars.. (according to wikipedia, it did).

Yeah, French Connection.

Though I don't mean to start an east coast/west coast thing.

Mr. Cage, a higher being is obviously telling you to STOP MAKING MOVIES. Please heed these warnings and retire.

They are setting up to film on 43rd st right now for I think it said 6pm between Lex and 3rd.

Where is 6pm between Lex and 3rd? I know it has to be uptown but where is 6pm?
