After Bad-Idea HuffPo Post, City Panel Member Resigns

2009_04_bevchi.jpg Betsy Perry has resigned from the city's Committee on Women's Issues after her ill-advised post on the Huffington Post last week. Perry, a marketing consultant who was appointed to the panel by Mayor Bloomberg, had written about Mexico's bad rap, "Between the guns, drugs, kidnappings and swine flu, this poor country can't catch a break and, maybe it shouldn't." CityRoom has Perry's statement, which reads: "Rather than become a distraction to Mayor Bloomberg, I think it best if I resign from the Women’s Commission. I have enjoyed the work and the many fine friends I made and continue to be a great fan of the mayor’s and the wonderful work he has done for our city." While Bloomberg had called her remarks "inappropriate," he didn't outright fire her from the unpaid position, prompting criticism from mayoral hopeful City Comptroller Bill Thompson, who writes on his Facebook page, "[The] Mayor should have acted more swiftly to remove Betsy Perry from the NYC Committee on Women's Issues after her insensitive remark." (Thompson also held a rally outside the Mexican consulate over the issue.)

I actually prefer HuffPo over the New York Times, New York Post and Daily News which are mouthpieces for Bloomberg.

    1. A person nobody has ever heard of who sits on a city commission nobody has ever heard of is forced to quit over something nobody even read. Awesome.

    2. Nevermind the stuff about Mexico, people should be offended that a supposedly "top-tier" blog would publish something so poorly written and nonsensical.

This is further proof that regardless of your politics, HuffPo is garbage. Every few months they brag about raising tens of millions in further investment. Where is all that money? They're certainly not paying any good writers with it.

What did she say that isn't true?

That is why you should post under an alias.

Oh... I just realized that she wasn't commenting on a post, she wrote the actual post. Oops, not the smartest thing to write...

    Political correctness claims another victim.

  • I don't know if it's really political correctness vs. common sense. If you're advertising yourself as a city official (and her HuffPo byline did), it's probably a good idea to stay away from "trying to be funny."

O schadenfreude, how I embrace thee.
