An NYPD sergeant may have been catching up on Law & Order reruns via DirecTV while a real life crime was being committed on her at the Terminal 5 baggage check. A JetBlue baggage handler has been arrested for breaking into a suitcase and stealing the gun of the sergeant, who was on her way from New York to Orlando on th emorning of April 22. After first breaking into the sergeant's suitcase, 21-year-old Tamarcus Hines then was able to open a locked gun box within it, taking an unloaded 9mm handgun, ammunition and a gun holster. When the sergeant noticed her bag had been tampered with and weapon missing upon arrival, police were able to connect the crime to the baggage handler. Hines admitted to the theft and led cops to a Queens sewer where he had tossed the gun. Queens DA Richard Brown said yesterday, “It is upsetting that a passenger who buys an airline ticket and lawfully checks her luggage...has been subjected to having her belongings stolen. This case is, however, especially egregious in that the defendant is alleged to have brazenly stolen a 9mm handgun that had been properly secured by its owner, a sergeant with the New York City Police Department.”

I thought having things stolen while traveling was a fact of life...
It appears Tamarcus Hines' future football career has come to a screeching halt. He will be playing the in and out of jail game probably for the rest of his life.
His mother was shocked and said, "This isn't true, he was always a good kid. He was getting his middle school diploma at the end of the month and was looking to go to college." The father could not be reached for comment.
He steals a gun then throws it in the sewer? Thieves remorse or was he going to go back for it later?
I think he got scared when he was under suspicion and tried to dispose of the evidence.
As others have pointed out, unfortunately it's all too common to have your bag looted when you check it, and if it hadn't been a cop's gun he probably would have gotten away with it. I've reported missing items to the TSA before, and gotten the brush-off.
the real heroes here are the TSA. oh hey, who's that searching bags in the subway?
What are you talking about? Where in the article is TSA mentioned? All I saw was a mention of Port Authority Police.
We are under surveillance every SECOND we are in an airport. Why arent the thieving baggage handlers being videotaped while blatantly stealing our possessions. This would not even have made the news if it werent for being NYPD.
How do you think they caught him?
I've had stuff stolen out of checked bags several times. Sucks.
