Focus On Sotomayor As Obama Weighs Supreme Court Picks

U.S. Court of Appeals judge—and Bronx native— Sonia Sotomayor is in the headlines as a possible candidate to fill Supreme Court Justice David Souter's seat. President Obama said of his selection process, "I will seek somebody with a sharp and independent mind and a record of excellence and integrity."

Sotomayor's name has been in the mix even before the election; as Esquire put it last fall, "As a Hispanic woman with 16 years of court experience, Sotomayor would slay two of the court's lack-of-diversity birds with one swift stone." ABC News' George Stephanopoulos thinks she's a shoo-in: "What are the chances that Obama DOESN'T pick Sonia Sotomayor? In her favor, she was appointed to the federal bench by George H.W. Bush. Elevated to the Appeals Court by Bill Clinton. She's a protege of Daniel Patrick Moynihan and a prosecutor with Robert Morgenthau. Graduate of Princeton and Yale after growing up in the South Bronx... 1-10 she gets the nod."

Back in 1998, Sotomayor spoke to the Daily News about her career. She said that when she was a little girl, she had hoped to become a detective, but then was diagnosed with diabetes, which put an end to those dreams: "I became very disappointed about not having a life plan. At the time, 'Perry Mason' had become a very popular show, and I loved Perry Mason. If I couldn't do detective work as a police officer, I could do it as a lawyer."

A News editorial is also very excited about the prospect of Obama considering Sotomayor: "Up from the Bronxdale Houses via Cardinal Spellman High School to serious consideration for the highest bench in the land. That's a hell of a journey, one that deserves note by the young in today's hard-scrabble city."

Here's hoping she gets the post. Maybe she can overturn Mayor Bloomsberg's three term decision.

Hope she gets the post.
She's come a long way.

Judge Judy would be a better choice.

Judge Judy is over qualified. No way would she get the job. Albeit she's Jewish and a woman, but people that are actually qualified don't get a job today. She's too old also and she would probably do it for a dollar a year and take a pay cut. But.

Judge Judy = loudmouth idiot

I wouldn't make her a traffic court judge in Point Barrow, Alaska, let alone a Supreme Court Associate Justice!

I hope the SCOTUS seat is filled based on ability, not demographics.

If the Supreme Court was filled on ability not demographics, it wouldn't have been all White for 200 years and all men for 220!

And second, can we please stop calling it SCOTUS????

Is it really that hard to type out "Supreme Court"?????

"Scotus" sounds like some guy's testicles - and I'm really not interested in thinking about the genetalia of elderly male lawyers!

So, folks, let's not call it "Scotus", please - let's call it the "Supreme Court"!!!

The demographic temptation is going to be almost overwhelming, because the Republicans can apparently be counted on to be as obstructive as possible, thus putting them in the role, in this case, of antagonizing women and Hispanics.

I can't see any way of filling the seat based on ability, because there is no objective way of evaluating candidates. Most people's preferences, including those of the people who matter, are going to be based on ideology and ethnic, religious and regional identity. It's a miracle the ones we get can all walk and talk, even George H. W. Bush's little joke.

as long as there's no Salsa music at the SCOTUS Christmas party. but I still have questions on her abortion stance.

Again, can we please stop calling it SCOTUS???

Please???

Is it really that hard to type out S U P R E M E C O U R T ????

Obama just needs to choose someone who's very very young, someone with an attitude that likes loud music and can drive Scalia to an early grave.
