'Amtrak Joe' Biden Says Avoid Planes, Trains! (If You're Sick)

2009_04_jbiden.jpg Our Amtrak-loving vice president was his usual chatty, off-the-cuff self when speaking on the Today Show. Politico reports, "Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would not recommend taking any commercial flight or riding in a subway car 'at this point' because swine flu virus can spread 'in confined places.' A little more than one hour later, Biden rushed out a statement backing off his stern warning a bit."

Matt Lauer asked Biden what he would tell relatives about traveling to Mexico and the VP was against any and all travel on a plane, "If you're in a confined aircraft and one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft... I would tell members of my family — and I have — that I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now...That's me. I would not be at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway."

But apparently an airline official (we hope subway officials around the country, too) complained about Biden's "fear-mongering" so the White House statement, uh, clarified Biden's position, "The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways. This is the advice the vice president has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week. As the president said just last night, every American should take the same steps you would take to prevent any other flu: Keep your hands washed; cover your mouth when you cough; stay home from work if you're sick and keep your children home from school if they're sick.”

And the right wing goes ape about this "gaffe" in 5...4...3...2...

Like you would if Bush or Cheney said this. Pot, meet kettle.

Anyone else remember the routine pummeling Dan Quayle got?

I guess we can now start calling him Amtrak No... Eh?

Oh Joe come one man, I mean, I seriously doubt you have ever even ridden the NYC subway.

not to defend his over the top statements this morning, but considering that he commuted by public transportation to and from work every day right up until he required Secret Service protection, I'm thinking he's more likely to have been willing to ride the subway than, say, the members of the MTA's board.

Cool, well done Joe, I hope that is true.

Based on personal experience and the word of many Amtrak conductors, Biden was a real asshole while riding the train and made it a point to make a show of him pretending to work. The conductors had several nasty nicknames for him, too as he was one of the more difficult passengers.

Vitamin C, Oil of oregano, Garlic, sleep, water, happyness.

But if you want to give your baby Vitamin C, good ol fashion Tropicana 100% orange juice might do the trick (but I am not sure if Babies can take that, can they?). Or other natural sources.

For adults, make sure you take 5000 units of Vitamin C a day! (you can take less, but if you want a strong immune system...).

Also, Vitamin A and D.

And it has to be ORGANIC Vitamin C (made of Rose hips) not that synthetic crap sold at these large chain drug stores (I am looking at you Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, CVS).

Buy them at Organic Stores such as Whole Foods or your local Organic Health store.

This also applies to Vitamin D and A.

How does the White House arrange an appearance like this knowing he's going to say something totally batshit?

The president's advise for people to stay home from work if they are feeling sick or to cover you mouth when you cough is good IF people actually take that advise. Unfortunately, we all work with "martyrs" who feel compelled to show up when they are sick and rude subway passengers who will cough on your face swine flu or not. So I would say Biden's off the cuff remarks are on target. At least for me. End rant.

Biden's sole purpose is to make Obama seem slightly less of an idiot in comparison.

How about securing the border so we can at least reduce the amount of people coming from the outbreak region where the flu has been deadliest?

Common sense loses to politicial correctness yet again.

I take both the train and subway every day and when I see folks cough near me I move away. I dont want the flu, so why stand near them and add the risk?

I think the gist is this.
if you think you're sick, don't go outside, don't go to work etc. don't go on a plane, don't go on a subway.
if you think your immune system is compromised, don't go near sick people and in a city of 8.4 million people, some will be sick and you don't know which ones.

Sounds like Joe's starting to really like his limo.

I believe our vice president is a terrific guy, regardless of his continuing project to prove that people can say stupid things. Point well made Joe, again. We are lucky his boss isn't as flawed as the rest of us.
