Judge: Women's Studies at Columbia Are Perfectly Legal

042709womenstudies.jpg There's just no justice for dudes in this world: Last week a judge threw out a lawsuit against Columbia University over the school's practice of offering women’s studies, but no corresponding courses for men who want to study themselves. Judge Lewis Kaplan followed the recommendation of a magistrate judge and dismissed Roy Den Hollander's lawsuit, rejecting his "central claim that feminism is a religion... Feminism is no more a religion than physics, and at least the core of the complaint therefore is frivolous." Of course, if you know your Den Hollander, you know he's not about to let some treacherous, man-hating judge get the last word. He tells City Room, "The only thing frivolous and absurd is men looking for justice in the courts of America. When it comes to men’s rights, judges act with an arrogance of power, ignorance of the law, and fear of the feminists."

Feminism is the ideology of misandary, just as white supremacy is the ideology of racism, but neither are a religions per se.  However, any such ideologies can be pursued with religious fervor in a worshipful way, which is what is evident in Women's Studies courses.

First reaction I had is "get laid, much?" Then on second thought, maybe this is his game ... and he does get laid much. So I'll withhold judgment.

  • I took a Men's Studies class once taught by a true blue MRA, a man who opened a controversial "Men's Support Center" near where I grew up. His class was called Psychology of Men, and I was really excited to take it. Contrary to popular belief about feminists, I'm always open to having my point of view refined by another's. I was curious about the Mens Rights movement and believed this class might teach me something. The course description promised we'd discuss male archetypes, differing definitions of masculinity throughout America's history, and the concept of "the white mans burden." What we got was a bitter, vengeful man who truly hated women and spent most of class time (when he wasn't letting us out early so he could go surfing) complaining about his ex wife and crying about his mother. Psychology of Men is right. I'm all for "Mens Studies," so long as it has some intellectual value, you know? The Mens Rights movement needs some respectable, educated, logical leaders before anyone with half a brain will ever take it seriously.

Sounds like a Women's Studies class with the sexes reversed.

Would you pass the tribal drum already, Iron John?

When I was at Columbia U. there WAS a course of Men's Studies--only it was titled "Contemporary Civilization"...silly--he should check his course guide more carefully next time.

So would this nutjob's complaint be satisfied by simply renaming the department to "Gender Studies"? Because that is basically what it is.

Too bad we can't involuntarily commit people anymore because damn does this guy have some serious psychiatric problems. Paranoia, anyone?

Also have never understood why so many people seem to equate psycho feminists with your average women. Psycho feminists are really like misogynists. They have nothing to do with reality or the courts or anything. I mean, all the rest of us ladies must be crazy, thinking we deserve equal pay for equal work and not to be condescended to just cuz we have boobies.

  • lagomorph

Haven't they been using MDMA in controlled environments to help people build trust?

I think that guy needs a couple of tabs and a really big hug. Cheaper for everyone than the next level of appeals.

  • Politburo

As I said last week, this case has nothing to do with the legitimate cause of Men's Rights.

As a member of the Church of Thermodynamics, I find that judge's physics quip offensive. Also, where/when did this tool grow up? the Little Rascals treehouse surrounded by bloodthirsty Amazons?

"Feminism is no more a religion than physics..."

That was supposed to be by itself; not a reply to WSA.
