An alert came over the newswire not long ago regarding an accident investigation at Manhattan Avenue and India Street in Greenpoint, where at least one victim has been transported to Bellevue Hospital. A reader has just sent in the above photo, and we're hearing rumors that "the driver of one of the vehicles struck a woman on Huron Street and was fleeing the scene, and caused this pile up. From what the police were saying, it appears that the woman in critical condition at this scene was an occupant of one of the cars on the bottom of the pile."

From what I understand, the cops were chasing the guy, then he hit the woman at manhattan and india, then continued on up manhattan ave where he plowed into those cars you see at the corner of dupont and manhattan. I'm pretty sure those cars were parked and empty
Wow, hope the lady recovers.
From that photo, I can't quite figure this out: Did the Mini Van push the SUV onto the Station wagon?
That's what it looks like. The silver minivan is the one facing the wrong way. Crazy photo.
I was just on the scene, live a block away, and people are saying the collision pushed that suv up onto the car parked behind it. The glasses the woman was wearing are still laying on the street.
Stupidly, there are tons of cops around but no one is directing traffic at India St. and Manhattan Ave where cars traveling North have to awkwardly turn around. Manhattan Ave is closed off for three blocks
"The glasses the woman was wearing are still laying on the street."
ummm...time for a new prescription.
Are you serious? A woman was hit by a speeding car and that's your comment? You truly are an ass.
Clearly hotstepper is not serious.
Or maybe because the glasses are still laying on the street , this may not be so clear...
The cars parked on the street were empty. The black SUV belongs to the man that owns the store. The green station wagon is one of the neighbors'. I saw the blonde girl die in the road by Huron st, several blocks south. She got hit by the white van as the cops were chasing it, she flew almost a block from where she was hit, right out of her shoes. She was still alive when I saw her, but I noticed when the ambulance came they put her in and did not go to the hospital. Sad.
according to the google maps streetview, the photo above doesnt look like manhattan and india. a minor point i know. just wondering.
It's not, it's Manhattan and Dupont.
The woman was struck near India and Manhattan but the driver continued on until it lost control and hit the parked cars at Manhattan and Dupont.
This is right where I live, on Dupont St. Jeezus. Kid stole a car, hit woman, sped off, lost control, caused massive pile up. What a mess. And tried to run away! what is wrong with people who do shit like this? ugh.
One less SUV. Kidding. Hope the lady's alright and the kid get what's coming to him.
Unfortunately the lady is dead :(
She was Polish, in early 40ish, her name was Violetta. She was married for over 20 years now. One child - a 20 years old daughter living in Chicago. It`s a freaking tragedy!
Although it`s the NYPD`s fault!!!
They should have block all the streets around and then arrest the kid, instead of chasing him and put innocent people life in danger. This minivan wasn`t worth this woman`s life and there were many other options to get this theft sucker.
It`s my personal opinion though.
Thank you for your information, unknown123.
I've been searching for the identity of this poor woman but there is hardly any news about this incident.
I didn't see, but heard, the impact from my apt. When I ran down to the street I expected to see a car collision. Instead, it was a woman that was hit and lying in the street. ...the site effected me greatly.
I didn't know her but she was a neighbor and a part of our community.
All my sympathy to her family.

I have to say, the NYPD at fault thing kind of strikes a nerve with me. There are a whole lot of places (other than NYC obviously) that just don't do the hot pursuit thing, and for this very obvious reason - PEOPLE GET FCKING KILLED FOR NO REASON. If they were chasing Timothy McVeigh then that's one thing, but honestly, I don't think anybody can justify this - even if he had only crashed and destroyed more property. Other places saw this alarming trend of high speed chases ending usually in the "suspect" wrapping himself around a tree. Don't tell me that "Well that's what criminals should get!" Gimme a break! This is non-violent crime. Just show up at 5:00 AM when the guy is asleep and drag him off to jail. They would have found him eventually - Probably within a day, and it was just a minivan. I know I know I have no idea how it is on the streets, and how the cops put their lives on the line every day and all that stuff, and thank you to the guys that do their job well, but a big middle finger to the guys with a little too much testosterone that cause stuff like this to happen, shoot kids, frame people, and so on. It's a real job, not an action movie. The NYPD needs to review its policies, weed out the idiots and douchebags on its force, and divide their pay amongst the officers that stay clean and respectable, do their job well, exercise discretion, human decency, and respect for the laws they're sworn to uphold. I walked by the flowers and candles at the end of Huron St. this morning, and it really just sucked to know that some poor woman died for no reason. It's truly sad. Smarten up people. Isn't life tough enough without this kind of bullshit?
Wow I thought Florida was the worst in the Nation with car crashes & speeding. They are all out of control out there. Too much coke or something. Automobile Anxiety just keeps on getting worse for Americans. Its Sad.

agreed
"If they were chasing Timothy McVeigh then that's one thing, but honestly, I don't think anybody can justify this"
how is a cop supposed to know why the car is running? cops do car stops all the time where people take off. could be wanted for murder, could have drugs or guns, could just have a stupid suspended license and not want a ticket.
"This is non-violent crime. Just show up at 5:00 AM when the guy is asleep and drag him off to jail."
stolen cars are a non-violent crime? look up statistics, over 80% of all stolen cars are used to commit another crime, like robberies and murders.
"a big middle finger to the guys with a little too much testosterone that cause stuff like this to happen, shoot kids, frame people, and so on."
i was a cop, you have no idea what its like to have someone pull a gun on you, or wrestle around with a guy with a gun who would rather kill you than go to jail. i do,and i did almost shoot a 14 year old kid one time. and if i did i would have been 100% in the right and guess what, that 14 year old kid only had a BB gun. but i would have been all over sites like this with commentary like "well why didnt you shoot him in the leg, or use a taser, or use mace, hes just a kid et etc" meanwhile that 14 year old "KID" was using his BB gun to rob working people getting off the train after a long night of work

i agree, but the city got what it payed for when it refused to give cops contracts. they refused to admit but they did lower hiring standards and had to beg people to take the job. every academy class has now become "the most diverse." im all for that provided it means these people are capable of being police officers, many of them, and i have seen it with my own eyes, barely speak english and just recently came to the country. how can you police a society you know nothing about and cant communicate with?
"I walked by the flowers and candles at the end of Huron St. this morning, and it really just sucked to know that some poor woman died for no reason. It's truly sad. Smarten up people. Isn't life tough enough without this kind of bullshit?"
def sad when innocent people are taken away from this earth too soon, but lets remember something here, the nypd didnt make the choice to flee in a reckless manner, the criminal behind the wheel of the van did.
pursuits dont work in a big city for this reason, but if a no chase policy is implemented, you will see thousands more of them as people start speeding off from simple traffic stops cause they know the police car behind them cant do anything about it. this societal movement to handcuff the police more and more everyday is gonna come back to bite everyone in the ass.
I wonder how many true and only witnessess will turn up? Someone saw her dying but she was only 20, now we know she was forty. Another witness reported that she was wearing socks, another saw flip flops flying in the air... And all these condolences from people who would not move and give their seats to old sick people who are not fast enough to run and get a seat in the subway... Shame.
To assume the people here to give their condolences are the same people who don't give up their seats to the elderly or sick is quite presumptuous, Dr. Seuss. Your train complaints seem to be an unrelated personal vendetta. The facts about how old she was or the way in which her shoes fell doesn't matter... a women in our community died senselessly.
So, was Keri Farrell driving one of the cars?
No?
Then why is Gothamist covering this story?
