Yesterday, a wake was held in Washington Heights for Julissa Brisman, a young woman who was killed last week during an appointment with a massage client at a Boston hotel. The Daily News' Michael Daly reports that the aspiring actress's mother wailed in Spanish, "Why not me? Why her? She was only 25. She was just beginning to live her life." And Brisman's friend, Mark Pines, said she would screen clients who responded to her Craigslist listing for massage services but added, "We will use her memory to try to keep other girls from ending up in the same situation."
The suspect in Brisman's murder, as well as in the Boston robbery of a prostitute who advertised on Craigslist, is Boston University medical student Philip Markoff, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held without bail. Police sources have said that detectives found panties belonging to the victims in his apartment as well as a gun in a hollowed-out copy of Gray's Anatomy.
Detectives revealed that Brisman's friend, the day after her murder, forwarded them e-mail from the suspect. Sergeant Detective Daniel Duff told the Boston that tip let them "leapfrog" other steps they would usually take in an investigation and allowed them to zero in on Markoff as a suspect. After observing him for a few days—Duff said, "Everything we had up until that point was, yeah, he looks like the guy. We didn't want to jump to any conclusions, and so we couldn't just go down there and lock him based on, yes, he's 6-3 and blond."— they approached him on Monday, after the surviving victim identified him as her attacker.
Markoff, who was driving to Foxwoods with his fiance Megan McAllister, was apparently quiet and calm while McAllister was confused. The detectives said she broke down when they told her her fiance would be charged with murder. She had been in NJ with her parents during the week and hadn't been following the case, but her mother told her, "'Be careful. There was some guy that killed somebody up in Boston.'"
The Daily News has a cover story with a friend of Markoff's from his undergraduate days at SUNY Albany. Morgan Houston claims that she and Markoff were study buddies but one night, after drinking, he got aggressive:
"He pushed me up against the wall and tried kissing me," Houston told the Daily News on Wednesday in an exclusive interview about her former classmate. She said that was the only time he ever tried anything—though he did remark how her butt looked good in a pair of jeans and apparently just pretended to be clueless in class to study with her—"He was a little awkward, but he was nice ... smart.""No, Phil, get off me, stop kissing me, I'm not interested in you, what are you trying to do?" a panicked Houston told Markoff as she struggled to free herself on the dark campus.
"I couldn't physically get him off of me. Thankfully, he wasn't on top of me, but I couldn't push him away."
Houston said she was "scared," but fortunately, another male friend walked by and pulled Markoff away from the soft-spoken brunette. "I don't know what would have happened," Houston said.

"She had been in NJ with her parents during the week and hadn't been following the case" Duh? They don't have newspapers, radios, TV's, internet service in NJ?
Advice to girlfriend, get a knife sharpener. Not for defensive use but for getting your brains working. You appear to be winning in the drawer for being the dullest.
Have a nice wedding rehearsal party. Any plans for where you will be honeymooning. Las Vegas perhaps?
serial killer, panty collector, gun in hollowed out textbook, leapfrogging detectives.
so many interesting details and that is what you focus on?
Come on- Hell will freeze over before Snoopy misses a chance to badmouth NJ and all who reside there.
Yep. I go directly to the prime stuff. I don't fool around discussing facts or evidence. Straight to the prime stuff.
I like Jersey. It's great for a lot of things, like the turnpike and routes 78 and 80. 22 sucks except for the flagship in Union. Let me see what else? Ikea off exit 13, Paramus Mall, ...
I'll get back to you (donner) as soon as I can find another item or two that make me want to spend quality time in Jersey.
"Duh? They don't have newspapers, radios, TV's, internet service in NJ?"
Of course they do, and yet not everyone there slavishly follows every news story. There was no way for her to know that it had anything to do with her or anyone she knew, and perhaps had better things to do on a weekend with her parents in New Jersey than obsess over a killing that had happened in Boston.
Duh, indeed.
"You appear to be winning in the drawer for being the dullest."
I believe you meant "draw" and not "drawer" as in "luck of the draw".
Actually, he's referring to the colloquialism of "being the dullest knife in the drawer."
"I'm not chattle."
"Excuse me, but I think you mean "cattle""
Thank you for the observation. It appears there are a few on this blog that are awake.
This case is a tabloid wet dream.
Sadly, Just wait for the TV Movie on Lifetime or "Law & Order".
giggity giggity goo!
I bet the cops have a "very special evidence locker" for this stuff, complete with full length mirror, humidor, and velvet cuffs.
